Hello. My son is very interested in attending UVa. He's #4 out of 275 in his class, has 2230 SATs (790 M, 740 R) and will have taken the most challenging program available during HS (including I think 7 APs and 3 "college in high school" type courses). He has pretty good ECs and some significant academic honors, and is a double legacy (myself and my wife both attended). It would seem he would be a good candidate, but there appears to be a bit of a problem: very little if anything in the way of merit-based scholarships. This is of particular concern since the OOS tuition is so high. Am I missing something, or do most OOS students no matter how qualified just have to "suck it up"? (I have already looked at the non-institutional leads they have on their financial aid website, and it appears that most programs listed either involve a minor amount of aid or are very few in number). Any info. would be appreciated- when I attended the tuition was about $850 a semester! (in-state).

Even very talented instate students with similar stats have to "suck it up" and pay full freight. UVa has not had to woo kids with merit aid-just not necessary as it is an attractive choice for both instate and out of state kids.

Thanks for the information

My OOS daughter receives financial aid through Access UVA, a needs-based program. The FA office at UVA is fabulous and helpful. Without this aid she would not have been able to attend this wonderful university.
