Merit aid from IU and CMU

Congratulations to you and your son, Socomom!

Did anyone else hear anything from IU last night?

We did not. I think I’m going to call now. I will pass along anything I find out.

I just called and learned that it is being handled on a department by department basis. Some have sent out, others are still working on it. I was told that percussion should be finalized by end of day today or mid-day tomorrow. They said that if we didn’t receive and email by the end of the day tomorrow that would mean that he didn’t receive any merit award. I’m sure they are getting a lot of calls but they were very friendly and understanding when I spoke to them.

Pukadad: I just called Jacobs and can corroborate what you say, except that I was told that the emails would all be out by 5:00 p.m. today The person I spoke with actually checked my d’s record and nothing had been recorded one way or the other (yes or no scholarship), so we’re still in the same boat, except that we’re waiting for voice performance. I have been told (not by IU), however, that Jacobs never awards scholarships to sopranos, so . . .I wish you better chances.

Thanks for sharing whatever information you had!

Thanks KeyofH. They checked my son’s name as well. I got the feeling he was giving them an escape valve just in case they didn’t get them all out today so I guess I’ll be staying up past my bedtime again tonight. Can’t believe they were sending out emails at 11:32 pm. That tells me they are working hard to get the information out as fast as they can. I’m sure the individual departments can slow the process down as admissions has to wait for each department to send them their recommendations.

Thanks, KeyofH. S and I are very pleased about IU. I am still wondering what is up with Carnegie Mellon, though. Has anyone gotten any merit aid recently from CMU for music??? We were led to believe an offer would come, but nothing yet and they are not returning my calls… Does this mean they are not going to make an offer?

And you guys thought this would all be over once the acceptances were in! Lots of luck to all of you.

My son did get notified of a Deans Award from IU yesterday morning. He is a MM of voice applicant. Maybe they are going in groups. They are obviously super busy and swamped with lots of talent. Good luck to those still waiting.

Son just an email from IU so they are still going out. $8,000 merit on top of the $2,000 academic money he was already offered. He seems happy with that.

Congratulations to NJ Jazz Dad and Papengena – I am very happy for you and your children!

NJ Jazz Dad-what instrument does your son play?

Thank you KeyofH:) I’m happy for him too!! Since he’s gotta try to finance grad school on his own. We took care of the first 4 yrs, lol. We are out of it now…But, I think we gave him a good start.

Wait a minute, papengena – sounds like you took care of more than the first four years – what about the first 22 years!! If it weren’t for the first 18 years, there wouldn’t be any four years at IU or wherever!!! Let’s not cut ourselves short!

Did anyone else hear from IU today? I’m wondering if they are working late again.

They are probably working late again tonight,

but not on yours! - jk

I didn’t hear anything from IU re scholarship. I was just assuming that my daughter is not going to be offered a scholarship. We’re kind of resigned to that and it’s okay. I wish everyone else the best of luck and minimal anxiety.

Pukadad, sorry for the delay, son plays the bass trombone. Not common instrument but used for both big band jazz and classical although both types only usually need one of them. Think IU has about 10 bass trombonists which is probably the most of any school.

Operadad: just found out that Indiana is still sending scholarship offers for voice students. Details are still being worked out. But all should be out by COB today.

I thought just waiting to hear of acceptance/rejection was nerve wracking!! Turns out trying to choose the best school, best FA package, with the best voice teacher for ds…is even more complicated…lol…
