From the looks of the Hamilton website, I'm assuming the school doesn't offer merit aid. Is that correct?

Correct. They stopped offering it last year (but they only offered a handful of merit scholarships even then).

When we visited Hamilton last week, I searched their website for our home state, just to see if I could find the frequency distribution of students by state. What came up instead was a list of scholarships targeted to students coming from particular regions or states. I frankly don't understand the difference between "merit aid" and "scholarship" - but maybe that would be an option for you DougBetsy?

Hamilton does have the Bacot, Gunn, Kempf endowment which provides funds for students from South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, and one county in New York (the honoree had family in these areas). This fund provides travel money so applicants from these states can visit Hamilton, as well as aid money (which used to be merit-based, but is now need-based).

This is what I was referring to:
Hamilton College - College Catalogue - Special Scholarships

Besides the regional ones, there are ones designed for students majoring in music, a science, etc, and various other targeted criteria.

I got a $2000 Siuda travel scholarship in my financial aid package, probably because I'm coming from Oregon.
