You should not be that disheartened. Consider that if you work summers and take loans as needed, you should not feel against the wall. Remember, those figures include just about all living expenses. If you're truly against the wall, there are ways of shaving a few thou off(stay in the cheaper dorms). Remember, It cost a minimum amount to live no matter where you are, and some of those expenses are just being transferred.

I have not seen Marian College in WI mentioned. It is small with an excellent reputation in the state. Provides a great deal of merit aid. Liberal arts college.

To Alpha and others on the UF NMS program,

The UF NMS program does not grant in-state tuition for out of staters, but it is close. Currently, if you are in-state you pay $100 per credit hour. NMS finalists from out of state pay $125 per credit hour.

The honors program at UF is only a two year program, if that makes any difference to you.

Here are numbers that may be close to actual cost for an out of stater going to UF on a NMS program:

Tuition: $3,750
Room and Board: $8,000
Books: $ 800
Travel/Misc.: $2,000

Total (est.): $14,550

So, with UF generously giving $9,500 per year, your total out of pocket may be about $5k per year, more or less.

I would strongly suggest that NMS finalist candidates should also look at the U of Arizona, U of Tulsa, U of Alabama and others who may offer even more than UF.

Edit: Also should mention that I believe the $9,500 per year will be a fixed amount, but tuition, room and board and other expenses may still go up. Those are estimates based on current costs. gnu

There is a thread compiled by the parents of schools with good merit aid
