merit based scholarships

If i could get into Vanderbilt would someone with a 3.5 uw gpa and a 34 or 35 act have a chance at the merit based scholarships (ingram lanier chancellor) i have great ec's and that would be what would propell me toward the "academci achievement grants"

thanks for imput, i could post my ec's if yall feel it necessary.

They won't give you a scholarship just based on your GPA and Test Scores. There are certainly plenty of people who receive academic scholarships, but I think the main reason these students receive said scholarships are awards and exceptional performance in various state and national competitions. If you want the Ingram, you had better have some really impressive community service. Go ahead and post a full resume because there is no way anyone could tell you your chances of getting a scholarship based on what you posted.

as requested: please evaluate my chances (if admitted) at one of vandy's merit based scholarships.

I think you will probably get some kind of scholarship- whether it's half, full, or somewhere in between is hard to say. What activities are you involved in besides debate that would make your application as interesting to read as it is impressive?

Cool. You should consider looking at some schools in addition to Vandy because with your EC's you will be competitive at nearly every school in the country.

chillax88 - what is the Team USA All-American qualifier? I've been (relatively) successful at the national level myself and very successful at the state level and have NEVER heard of it.

Don't take this the wrong way, but it sounds as though you're basing a lot of your debate resume off the assumption that most people reading it will have no idea what debate is or how debate honors work. I'm sure you're really quite talented and have had a remarkable amount of success, but a lot of these just don't make sense. How could there be a European championship or one in South Korea without translators who can translate the extremely high speeds that most national circuit speakers use?

Also, how are you a world champion or one of the top debaters in the nation and yet you only managed to place 27th at nationals? What school do you go to? What's your name and who is your partner?

I'm not trying to be hostile, I'm just honestly curious.

the qualifier took place at willamette university (oregon)

its not like were reading files at 325 wpm the event is based off communication and our opponents are all fluent in english. most all attend english prep schools in their respective country.

i made the team by being in the top 5... even though i didnt perform very well at nationals. my name is greg nance i attend bainbridge hs in seattle. im an ld debater and thus have no partner

i can understand you are "curious" but you seem (purposefully or not) like a giant douchebag. im sorry youve never heard of team usa but most adcoms have.

No need to be a jerk. I tried to keep my comments relatively tame; I'd appreciate it if you'd do the same.

You didn't mention that you're LD, not policy. That clears up a lot for me--thanks. I was just a little miffed at what I perceived to be some arrogant policy debater (because, after all, we really ARE a notoriously arrogant breed) trying to inflate his accomplishments, but now I can see that this isn't really the case.

Good luck to you. Are you hoping to be recruited for LD by some of your schools?

i perceived your post to be arrogant despite the disclaimer at the bottom. im hoping to be recruited for debate; i can do parli and LD and i can cross over to policy relatively quickly (im well versed in theory and know the ins but wouldnt get recruited for policy)

once again im not trying to inflate anything.

Well, sorry you took it as such. Good luck with admissions!

"im well versed in theory"
i wish there was a rolleyes smiley on this site, because this kid is my friend and i've debated him 12 times (and beat him 12 times) and i can assure you he is not even close to being "well versed in [policy or even LD] theory", although he is a persuasive guy (and quite muscly) and a very good debater who has gotten farther than i have TOC-wise (that is to say, I didn't qualify at all and he did lol).
hell, i don't even consider myself to be anything close to a solid theory debater... so maybe there was a little bit of arrogance in that post, or at least some unwarranted optimism :)

i would objectively say im a good theory debater. since vbi ive probable put in 100 hours writing shells and working with navot and post. like im not trying to be arrogant, objectively i know vus up. and mosty, ish dont think so.

keep him in zeh ghetto? i think not

ramses:

2 to 0 > 12 to 0

sorry bud (rolleyes smile)

There actually is a rolleyes smiley - like so: : rolleyes : (remove the spaces)
