Is there such thing as an OOS waiver for JMU? Seems like the best-case scenario scholarship is the Dingledine (and there are only six of them,) which would be like $7,500/yr., which granted is a great break but still far short of full tuition for an out of state student.

Are there other merit scholarships avail. that may not be listed on thr website? Thx.

There are other merit scholarships… some of them are awarded via the Dingledine application. Each of the 50 Dingledine scholarships receives some form of merit aid ranging from $500 for one year to $2000 for two years to the Dingledine depending on where you rank in the interview portion.
If you are an intended STEM major (Science, Tech, Engineering, Math), they offer Second Century Scholarships which cover 3/4 of tuition for all four years ~$5500 depending on the cost of tuition that year.
There are also departmental scholarships offered to freshmen, so maybe ask the head of the department in which you want to major in.
REALLY REALLY IMPORTANT: JMU allows students to only hold one university scholarship… I found this out my freshman year and lost $8,000 in merit money I had been awarded because they let you take the scholarship with the highest value. So even if you get the Dingledine, you can’t receive any other scholarships.

I really don’t know how merit/need-based money is going to play out anymore, since all public VA schools had their funding cut by ~25%, but these are definitely worth applying for because once you receive it, it’s guaranteed by the university (at least that’s what they said about my scholarship).

Let me know if you have anymore questions!!
