Merit scholarship finalist status (AB Duke, etc) notifications

I was curious if anyone received notifications about finalist status for the AB Duke scholarship (or any other merit scholarship), as according to previous years’ posts notifications were sent via email the first Friday in March. No email here, it is a long shot anyway.

Please remember that Duke has had many days (5+) of weather-related closure, which means most staff and faculty do not go to campus. That’s very unusual and I suspect is may have delayed several admissions/merit scholarship processes.

BN Duke finalists were notified today.

I was notified as a Reggie Howard finalist

Congratulations to both of you!

Karsh International Scholar Finalist!! I’m blown away like I didn’t even realise I qualified because I don’t need THAT much aid… but wow… I feel beyond lucky!! Good luck everyone with your interviews!!! :slight_smile:

Does this mean we’ve gotten into Duke regardless of if we get the scholarship?

@EuropeanGal: “Does this mean we’ve gotten into Duke regardless of if we get the scholarship?”

Yes, it almost assuredly does. Your probability of non-admission is slightly lower than the probability English Channel running dry by month’s end. CONGRATULATIONS and welcome!
:wink:

Wow! My daughter checked her spam folder and discovered that she is a B.N. Duke finalist. She is beyond excited. Duke has been her dream school for years.

On a side note: many, many thanks to @TopTier for your wise advice to potential Dukies and especially for your love and dedication to your alma mater.

@wstrav‌: CONGRATULATIONS (and, much less important, thank you).

@TopTier Since I know that you are a Duke Guy, I want to ask you. I just got an email saying that I am a finalist for the Karsh international scholarship. Does this mean that I got accepted to Duke? :)) O:-)

@AKAKHALEDBEST‌: Please read post #6 . . . and sincere CONGRATULATIONS!

@TopTier‌ So if I do not win the scholarship, I am going to receive institutional aid form Duke (International Student with massive need)

Yes, thank you so much @TopTier for all your help on this forum!! Your posts are invaluable as I navigate through the threads to try and come to a decision!

Also, that is brilliant news :smiley:

@AKAKHALEDBEST‌ (re post#11):

Probably not. I quote Duke’s applicable international undergraduate FA policy, which was readily available for your research:

*"Duke University will meet full demonstrated financial need for a limited number of international students. Each year Duke expects to enroll 20-25 first-year foreign citizens who receive need-based financial aid and/or merit-based scholarships. There is no need-based aid for international transfer applicants.

“There are two applicant pools for foreign nationals: those not applying for financial aid (who will be considered for admission along with U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents), and those applying for financial aid (who will be considered in a separate process for a limited number of places in the entering class). Also, foreign citizens who do not apply for financial aid initially may not subsequently apply for financial aid during their time at Duke unless they become U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. For instructions on how to apply for need-based financial aid, visit the Financial Aid Office website.”*

These guidelines are provided here: http://admissions.duke.edu/application/aid#need-based-aid-foreign-nationals

Please especially note: “20-25 first-year foreign citizens who receive need-based financial aid and/or merit-based scholarships.”

@TopTier , I have not seen anyone mention being notified for either AB Duke or University Scholars. Is it possible that not all scholarship programs have notified their recipients? Hoping that some of the less specific (i.e. not contingent on being NC residents, Legacy, etc.) may be delayed a little due to the days lost to weather. Or since some of the scholarship recipients have been notified, all of them have? Thank you for your thoughts.

I was reading last year’s thread and I believe someone was notified of being a University Scholar on the 20th. I don’t think USP has finalists, that’s why the notify later. The first time you’re contacted about USP is when you’re offered the scholarship.

@SCNomad‌: Please understand. the following is entirely speculative. I know the several, major, undergraduate merits-scholarships have their own selection committees; there is no single Duke undergraduate group, although I would not doubt that some individuals serve on more than one of these committees and that there is appreciable coordination among committees… Therefore – here’s the speculation – it seems possible that the committees could conclude each “round’s” work at differing times, which might to multiple notifications. This is pure guesswork, but I hope it helps.

@rippedfishnets‌ Here is the information provided to finalists last year:

http://sites.duke.edu/finalistweekend2014/finalist-weekend-schedule/

As you can see, University Scholars were part of the Finalist Weekend in April, and finalists were required to submit information and essays by March 20. From last year’s posts on CC, I believe all of the finalists (AB, BN, Reggie, and University) were notified on the same day last year.

I have no idea how notifications were handled this year for AB or University Scholars, but because of the short deadlines, if it was not Friday, it would have to be in the next day or two.

@TopTier , it does help, thank you.

I misspoke when I said there weren’t finalists, there are, but according to the last post on the page of the thread I just linked, notifications went out on the 18th and the additional materials were due on the 27th.
