My S21 joined a D1 team shortly after arriving at college as a full pay applicant and is earning good grades. Could he be eligible for a merit athletic or private scholarship next semester or year? If so where would he inquire?
He should start with the coach if he is looking for athletic money. Not sure he would get any other merit money for joining a team as a walk on. But again, the coach should know.
Thanks. That isn’t why he joined but I was curious since I know nothing about this. I guess they use merit as incentive mainly, that figures.
I think your S21 is at Colgate…here is the relevant info on their website regarding athletic scholarships:
Athletic Scholarships:
This is an institutional, athletic, merit-based award offered without regard to citizenship to selected student-athletes in certain sports. Recipients and scholarship amounts are determined by the relevant Colgate coach.
(Apologies if I mistook your son’s college)
It is up to the coach. First, he needs to have the money in his budget. Not all sports are fully funded with the number of scholarships allowed in the sport by the NCAA, so even though the NCAA may allow 10 scholarships for that sport (all to 10 athletes or split) the coach may only have enough money for 3 to 4 scholarships. He needs to consider what he’s already promised to the next recruiting class (and maybe the one after that). Some coaches split their scholarships evenly among the 4 classes, and if someone leaves that money stays with that class, but others shift stuff around all the time.
He should check with the FA office or his major department for other merit scholarships, and check to see if athletic scholarships can be stacked with merit scholarships.
Colgate also has some non-NCAA sports, so we could be talking about one of those too.
It’s Rowing
Ahhhh. Men’s crew is not an NCAA sanctioned sport. Since Colgate offers only need based aid, I doubt there is any athletic money for male crew participants. I suppose the athletic dept could be offering some $ to some of the athletes, but again, the coach would be the one to ask (which I probably wouldn’t do right away).
Some schools do give men’s rowing scholarships/grants. Sometimes the money comes from the school, sometimes from other sources (alums, rowing clubs) through the school. Just a different twist that it is not an NCAA sport. Women’s crew is.
