Does anyone know if the University Scholarship ($5,000 per year, renewable) has any kind of minimum GPA to keep it from year to year? The initial letter does not say so, can't find any info on the website. But at many schools these do, just want to figure out for sure if this one does. Thanks!

If there is a minimum GPA, it can’t be all that high (I have a $5,000 university scholarship, and I can’t recall ever hearing of one). You might want to call admissions just to check, but I can tell you right now that your son or daughter should never really need to worry about it.

The standard is a 1.5 GPA; so long as you put some effort into classes, you won’t lose the scholarship.

My daughter receives a merit scholarship and the only requirement is that she be registered for classes to receive it. There is no minimum gpa restriction.

How about the other side, what does it take to get a Merit scholarship??

They don’t give any statistics or info on the website or in the letter regarding how they reach the decision. I can honestly say my D expected to be deferred or rejected in the EA pool, so was actually shocked to see an acceptance and this merit award. It does seem like a lot of the EA accepted students got this scholarship, though. Thanks for the GPA info, I won’t worry about it unless her paper acceptance package says something about it.

I don’t know about any minimum GPA, but there is a required (brief) form you have to submit in the Spring of each year. We did not know about this (and my son admits it is possible he didn’t pay close enough attention to his emails) and were surprised that his scholarship did not appear on his bill for the Fall quarter this year. When we inquired, we were told that the form had not been submitted. I looked in vain to find notice of this in the online financial materials but did not. So I’m assuming that notice was probably given only through email and only to the students.

As it happens, the form is very simple and is basically only a statement of intent to continue as a student at UChicago. There might have been a $50 penalty for late submission, but other than that there was no problem with submitting it late, and the merit aid was promptly applied to the account after it was submitted.

The official page on these scholarships gives the most precise criteria, and even then it’s rather vague:

It also states that all you need to do in order to be considered is check off a box in the Common App, which is all I remember doing, but I still suggest contacting an official admissions rep to inquire about the form. I’m also pretty sure that I was notified of the scholarship via e-mail a few weeks after receiving my acceptance, so the two don’t necessarily go hand in hand.

intparent, i was just wondering where in your daughter’s chicago account did you guys find the information regarding to the scholarship?
