Merit Scholarships... Less chance if ED???

I read this post a minute ago, and it made a lot of sense (not sure why I never thought of this haha). Also, i'd say this is more regarding competition scholarships (most merit are i think).

"why would they give a scholarship to some who has commited to x early. haha
thats how I think of it. it doesn't make sense.
so i would say there is a much better chance if you are applying RD. they are trying to entice the best students. not the ones who have already committed"

Does anyone know, positively(without speculation) if there is any truth to this? I'd guess it would especially apply at competitive Lib arts colleges, because they have much smaller body = a handful of extra high stats really tips the stats for the whole school.

If anyone's sure about this, plz let me know. also let me know your opinion. I may choose not to apply ED at my favorite college and if this was basically true, it might make me apply RD. I may have to apply RD because of financial aid (sent in info for estimate) but i am hoping for merit $$$...

Yes. It's logical. If you apply ED, you can safely count on need-based aid at the top colleges which guarantee to meet full need; however, though you may get a token merit scholarship, the most valuable merit aid will likely go to RD applicants as a lure.

I'm wondering how many schools that have ED, also have pure merit scholarships? It seems to me that the schools with ED mostly have "need based" F/A and/or "need based scholarships.".

Just my opinion... anyone???

I have seen kids get into schools ED with aid packages and without. I've also seen some of them get merit awards afterwards For the ones with financial aid, the merit awards would reduce the aid given most of the time. I don't know if the same consideration is given to ED kids in all schools for merit awards.

i guess i should e-mail my school with that question: if the same consideration is given to ED kids in all schools for merit awards.
