Merit Scholarships?

Does U of C only give out $10k merit scholarships or do they also give out full-ride merit scholarships? I was told, I forget when, that they gave out 10 full-rides and 100 $10k scholarships, but I can only find info on the $10k one.

Also, how do they determine who gets them? Is it purely based on your essays/supplemental material or are SATs and GPA taken into account as well?

It’s not full ride. It’s full tuition. All I can tell you from our school: 2 students with about 99% similar stratospheric stats, both accepted EA, got the $10k one. One “lobbied” heavily–sent extra essays, showed great interest, etc. The other one didn’t do anything extra. I think the only way to get full ride is either all FA or a combination of Merit and FA. The scholarships are awarded by Faculty Committee upon, I guess, recommendations from the AdCom.

Wait…so there is a full tuition one? Where’d you get that info from (I can’t find any on it)?

Sorry to get your hopes high, but it seems things have changed. My information is for students admitted in 2008. I couldn’t find mention of the full tuition Merit award either.

It’s right there–it says that they give “a handful” of full-tuition scholarships and about 100 of the $10K per year.

yeah. handful=really hard to get
