mess up year?

My freshmen year I spent out with severe illness and ended up doing not well at all in school.

Right now I do really well and have gotten my GPA up significantly but it will never be as high as many of the people who didn't have that experience, i was also forced into more remedial courses when I came back to school so my sophmore year, while I had straight As, isn't impressive at all.

Will colleges understand this if I attach a note to my transcript, have my principals/guidance counselor write notes, and if I have really good test scores, take & do well in challenging courses next year (senior year)/this year, and am involved in good extracurriculars?

I really don't want something I couldn't prevent to hinder me from my first choice :(

Yes, colleges will understand this as long as your counselor includes the info in the counselors' report. Make sure that you counselor keeps a record of your illness and includes it in your file. Remember that counselors can change jobs, so the person who's your counselor now may not be your counselor when you're applying to college, so that's why you want your counselor to put the info into your file.

Thanks for your response, I'll definitely try to see her soon to talk about that!
