Mexican working in CA parent of US citizen accepted in US universities

Hi…

My son got accepted to UCSD Engineering, and his tuition is for Out of State. I’ve been working in San Diego for the past three years and filed taxes. Still the family is living in Tijuana. (He also got accepted to U of the Pacific, IIT, Loyola, Drexler, Montana and Hofstra)

Is there a way for him to ge reclassified as to get In-State tuition?

How about scholarships or FAFSA aid?

We’ll be relocating to SD this year

Thanks

Does he have a Green Card?

Is HE a US Citizen? I don’t think he’ll qualify for in-state tuition anywhere if he hasn’t been living in the US. You can check the [residency requirements](https://students.ucsd.edu/finances/fees/residence/criteria.html) on the UCSD website to see how they determine residency.

It sounds like the kid is a US citizen but has been living in Tijuana. If that’s the case, I’m pretty sure he can’t get in-state tuition or financial aid from UCSD. Not sure about scholarships - there are so many with varying conditions for eligibility.

The citizen child can file the FAFSA, and is eligible for federal financial aid. There is no problem about that.

California universities do have special rules that allow students with one parent who lives in California to qualify for in-state tuition and fees even if the child has been living elsewhere. However I don’t know what visa statuses allow a non-citizen, non-green card parent’s residency in California to qualify their citizen children as in-state residents. The non-citizen parent needs to ask about this at UCSD.
