MFA Acting at Rutgers

I auditioned at URTA in Chicago and Rutgers said they want to fly me out as they are interested in me. I am trying to get as much info as I can about the school. I am from California, so I don't know too much about the MFA program. Any insight would be helpful, thanks...

I auditioned as an undergrad for the BFA, but I understand that the MFA is very good so congrats! William Esper and a lot of the rest of the acting faculty trained at the Neighborhood Playhouse or Esper's studio, so expect a strong Meisner influence. You might want to read or refresh yourself with On Acting before you go.

Thanks fish. I have a pretty extensive Meisner training (one reason I think they like me).

Alumni include Calista Flockhart, James Gandolfini from Sopranos, Kristin Davis from Sex in the City and lots of folks on Broadway.

While it's true that those three did attend Rutgers, none of them have an MFA. M-G has a fairly good reputation for its BFA program and I'm sure that the reputation is similar for the MFA. It's known as a strenuous three year program. If I'm not mistaken the app deadline is March 1 so I guess you'll have to make up your mind soon!

And bring a heavy coat, gloves and tall winter boots!

Both Flockhart and Gandolfini are members of the Rutgers Hall of Distinguished Alumni. Does that mean they're graduates? Not really sure. Galdofino may have been an undergrad at RU. There is no mention of him attending Mason Gross only that he was a communications major.

I wanted to give an update on the time I spent at the MFA acting program at Rutgers since I posted a couple of years ago. Best of luck to any who is apply to programs.

my blog post was taken off about the Rutgers MFA program. If you want to read more. Click my name as the link is in the profile.

Dennis Baker has been trashing Rutgers all over the internet with abandon, but go to his website and post an argument against his personal vendetta and he will erase that post like a message from a bill collector. I question any person who decides to single handedly attempt to destroy other people’s dreams by crapping all over their school. Sorry Dennis. You didn’t make it. That doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with the institution. Plenty of people make it through Rutgers every year. You weren’t one of them. Live with it and stop being a baby.

Thanks for your response, Glass88. I feel I need to bring a bigger picture, as your comment leave out some things.

It is clear in my post that I wrote it not argue my dismissal, but with the goal to shed light on an inadequate dismissal policy as there was an attempt to unjustly dismiss another student. Also the post was was written in hopes that students think harder about what they are getting into before spending the money on a program that would do that.

I also make clear in the comments, that I applaud that students have not been kicked out in later years and hope that continues.

I also made clear in the comments (and email that I sent you), that no negative comment will be posted, without the person willing to back it up with their name. I am willing to put my name on what I write, and expect that from others. So, as I stated in the previous email, if your willing to put your name in the comment, I will post it.
