So I’m currently drafting my essay for MHC where I am responding to Prompt #3 where it asks you to “use your sense of humor, sense of outrage,sense of justice—or just plain good sense” to explain why a story from the front page of a newspaper caught your attention. I chose this prompt because I think it shows off my character and my humorous side, which I wasn’t really able to elaborate in the other 2 prompts. One of my inspirations is John Oliver, and I find that his sarcastic and snarky humor is sprinkled throughout my essay. I want to ask if it’s risky to be “too” funny/sarcastic/snarky when writing this essay. Should it be more serious? I feel like my essay may come off as an SNL monologue (which depending on the host/writer, can be cleverly written) rather than a college admissions essay.
Any thoughts on this? And if you’re writing the same prompt, how are you handling it?
