Hey, MICA recently accepted my portfolio and said it was competitive for scholarships, which, needless to say, stuck it on my radar. Has anyone here visited because I won't have time to visit before I apply. What are facilities, academics, dorms, etc like? Does anyone have any information for me on it?

I will be visiting MICA with my daughter in December during portfolio day. What aspect of art are you interested in? I am asking because MICA is very well known in Maryland for painting and fine art and has a great interdiciplinary program. Also, MICA is one of the only top art schools that has a 5 year program that leads to both a BFA and MFA in education.

painting and fine art is what I'm looking for, not the design.

Well then, MICA will be perfect for you.

Taxguy, I also will be anticipating your review of MICA. My daughter is very interested in Goucher, which has a one course a semester exchange program with MICA. She is particularly interested in drawing, animation, and film (not sure if MICA offers much in this area) so any information you can find out about those programs at MICA would be very appreciated.

Taxguy, I also will be anticipating your review of MICA. My daughter is very interested in Goucher, which has a one course a semester exchange program with MICA. She is particularly interested in MICA's digital arts/animation offerings so any information you can find out about those programs at MICA would be very appreciated.

MICA is very well known both in Maryland and in the US for its fine arts programs (painting and drawing). It is similar in philosophy to the School of Art Institute in Chicago. Its graduate school rating in these areas is 5th in the nation by US News and World Reports. It's also well known for its accelerated programs in BFA and MFA in educaton. Finally, MICA places a lot of emphasis on interdisiplinary studies. Thus, I would imagine that its digital media programs would be good too.

I did get their catalog, and I have to say that it was the most impressively design catalog that I have ever seen. It was very clever and professionally done. They certainly spared no expense.

While it clearly does have other majors such as video and animation, illustration, or graphic design, it is not known for these specialties. They may be good, but I don't know about them. Thus, you need to check out the school, which is what I will be doing.

Taxguy, She's not interested in majoring in these areas - she only would be supplementing her coursework at Goucher, which has its own decent art department. The students at the schools in the Baltimore are allowed to cross-register for one class a semester at other schools (including Johns Hopkins, Loyola, Mica, Towson, Goucher). The catch is you are at the bottom of the list in terms of registering but students we have talked to said it's still pretty easy to get into classes you want. But again, only one per semester. Daughter likes the idea that she could have the option of taking a few classes at an art school in addition to those at a liberal arts school. She doesn't want to go the art school route, however.

Goucher is a fine liberal arts school, and MICA is a top notch program for painting and drawing. I also think that Goucher provides transportation to MICA,but you will need to check this out. Overall, I think she will get a great education and have a lot of fun.
