Mich adopts new residency rules

Regents approve clearer, simpler guidelines for granting in-state tuition

Nice change for parents who send their children to school in MI for Middle and High School (big plus for boarding schools).

I like the change. I’m wondering how our state government is going to make sure undocumented citizens don’t get the instate tuition. I foresee another battle ahead.

^^all students who live in Michigan and attend MI middle schools and high schools will be eligible for instate tuition, regardless of whether they are documented or not. (And, I’m guessing that is the point.)

California adopted a similar residency requirement for instate tuition for undocumented a few years ago, but it doesn’t require middle school; the Calif requirement is 3+ years of a California HS, and graduation from a Calif HS.

oops, fixed it. (back to Starbucks for a cuppa joe.)

Huh? I didn’t get that at all from the article. No, they currently do not get instate rates.

I think they do now: [U-M</a> OK’s in-state tuition for military, undocumented students | The Detroit News](http://www.detroitnews.com/article/20130718/SCHOOLS/307180115)

I was surprised to learn veterans didn’t pay instate tuition before. I am glad they reformed that in Michigan.

Sorry, totally misspoke. I meant before this just happened (as in students who went last year) did not qualify if they weren’t documented.

Salander, i found that odd as well and extremely happy to see that change.
