"Michelle Shearer [Princeton '95] Named National Teacher of the Year" (news item)

<p>"Michelle Shearer was a pre-med student at Princeton University when, on the verge of burnout, she began volunteering in a class for deaf students. She loved it. That’s when she decided to go into teaching, starting on a path that led her to Frederick County schools and, now, to being named the 2011 National Teacher of the Year.</p>

<p>Shearer, a chemistry teacher at Urbana High School, won the title over three other finalists, from Florida, Illinois and Montana, in the Council of Chief State School Officers’ annual contest. Her victory was announced Sunday. . . . (continued)"</p>

<p>Ms. Shearer was honored today at the White House, where she was presented with the award.</p>

<p>There is great variety among the careers sought by Princeton graduates.</p>

<p>Those who see teaching in their future might be interested to know that Teach For America was founded by Princeton graduate Wendy Kopp '89. The idea for the now prominent national organization came from her senior thesis.</p>

<p>Wow, that’s really impressive that Teach For America came out of a Princeton senior thesis. It says a lot about value of the undertaking.</p>
