Michigan Basketball

Just because UM has the biggest football stadium doesn't mean its the best. I would certainly argue that Penn State, UF, Bama, Auburn, Tennessee, LSU, Clemson, and Texas AM are all better.
Still, Alex, I cannot agree with you that UM has the best Hockey program. It's just like saying Harvard is the best school, or Duke has the best b-ball program. UM is certainly an elite program, but you can't say its better than Maine, Boston College, or Boston U.

Maguo, there is not such thing as #1 in those contests...but there is such a thing as the best. I would certainly agree that a few other programs match Michigan in Hovkey, but statistically speaking, Michigan is #1. That cannot be denied. Michigan has the best overall record, the most wins, the most national championships and the most frozen four appearances. That's a clean sweep. And still, I agree, that Michigan cannot claim to be #1 in hockey, but along with 3 or 4 other hockey programs (I would definitely add Colorado College, Denver and a couple others), Michigan is as good as they come, just as Harvard is undeniably unbeatable as an academic institution or just as sure as Duke is the most consistant and dominant basketball program of the last 20 years.

As for football stadia, it is truly impossible to rank them. However, in every single stadium rating I have ever seen, Michigan is listed among the very best. One thing is clear, no stadium can claim to be better than Michigan.

So are you going to argue that UM football is also the #1 program in the country because it leads in wins and is probably in the top 3 for national titles? Notre Dame, Ohio State (maybe), USC, Oklahoma and several other programs have just as great of an argument.
Harvard unbeatable at academics? I would say that it is the best, but Princeton, Stanford, Yale, MIT and several other institutions are just as good.
Yes, I totally agree that football stadia are impossible to rank. Michigan is certainly great, but it cannot be said to be the best. It is a very subjective matter.

Michigan football, like Michigan Hockey, can make a case for being the greatest program (#1 winning percentage, #1 wins, and top 5 in NCs), but like in Hockey, football has several programs that compete with Michigan. Notre Dame, USC, OSU, Nebraska, Texas, Alabama and Oklahoma to name a few.

And yes, MIT, Princeton, Stanford and Yale can all lay claim to being the best university in the land...ujp there with Harvard. The point I have been trying to make is that there doesn't have to be a clear-cut #1. In fact, there seldom is a clear-cut # anything. That's why I think the USNWR is flawed. How can they mechanically say who is #4 and who is #14 and who is #44? When you have a thousand universities, can you truly differentiate between #14 and #25? In the end, it boils down to preference.

But let us remember that Michigan Hockey is the #1 program in the nation. 9 NCs and 24 Frozen Fours.

How do you reconciliate this quote with what you wrote in post #24?

Easy, in the initial post, I was refering to statistical measures (NCs, Frozen Fours, overall record, most wins etc). From a statistical standpoint, Michigan hockey is #1. In post #24, I was stating that the quality of universities or sports programs can be measured in any number of ways and that more than 1 can be considered the best.

Whatever, Alex, i'm not going to argue with you about hockey anymore. I infact don't know anything about it. never even watched a whole game, actually never even watched a whole quarter (i mean period).

chibearsfan17

"Hockey doesn't even sell out Yost Arena consistently."

Check with the Athletic Department - hockey has been sold out for years. Try to get season tickets as a non-student.

I wasn't talking about season tickets, I'm just talking about tickets to any old game. I can walk up to Yost on almost any game day and they will have tickets that I can buy for the game because they don't sell out. I've done it multiple times.

Michigan Basketball gonna be pretty hot, Alex Legion already committed to Michigan, a top 15 five star SG recruit from detroit country day. i'm going to get tickets next season, but fact remains that Michigan undergraduate education is horrible.

wow you're a depressed loser.

Wait till Alex gets here and chews this Yao kid up.

I have given up on Yao! LOL But at least we can discuss Michigan Basketball in a civil manner! hehe

Houston agrees.

yeah MICHIGAN BASKETBALL

Let us not get too excited. 16-3 (6-2) sure sounds great, but let us face it, of the remaining 8 Big 10 games, 6 are against top 25 teams, including road games at Iowa, MSU and OSU and home games against Illinois, OSU and Indiana. We also have a trip to Purdue, which is never easy, even if they are having a bad year. I honestly think we will finish our last 8 games with a 4-4 record, which will still give us a 20-7 (10-6 in conference play) record for the year and probably land us a decent spot in the field of 64.

I don't see Michigan with anything better than a 6 seed. Probably an 8-9 game, which typically means an early exit.

Darn, Penn State (my team), almost beat Michigan last night. I disagree with you A2Wolves. If UM gets a 6 seed, I think they could advance to or beyond the sweet 16. Remember that UM's coach, Amaker, did play for Duke and knows how to handle to tourney.

You got into UM, yet you can't read a post on a message board?

Just a testament to the quality of UM, JK. Nobody actually reads these "unimportant" threads intently. I just skim them.
