Which school should I goto? I want to major in engineering and then go on to med school. i don't have to major in BME tho.

I would also like to add that I have visited both Michigan and Carnegie Mellon and I got nothing out of the visits except that the architecture of CMU is better and the campus feels closer.

anybody? bump

im biased but id go to Vandy

why? any particular reasons?

I'd go with Vandy too. Nice weather, good town, nicely sized campus, good but social students. Very good undergrad academics.

But, Vandy Engineering is ranked number 38.

I'd go for CMU because of the rep it has with employers

money is an issue to me, i'm also a Chinese American. Vandy would cost 6 k a year with 6k in loans, CMU is 10 k a year with 15 k in loans, and Michigan is 8 k a year plus 8 k in loans.

For med school placement, all three are excellent. Choose for money/ lifestyle. I would go Vandy, but due to lifestyle. Michigan might be the best balance. CMU isnt worth the extra money.

38, so what, I thought you were going to med school anyway. In engineering all the top 50 schools are good.

Yeah, agreed its absolutely irrelevant. Cornell Med School isnt going to look at the exact same GPA at any of these very differently.

More important is lifestyle. Michigan is a large community, so if you are the type who likes to hang out with other Asians in large groups, then its probably a better choice. If you are the type who will hang out at frat parties and loves a smaller campus, its vandy. CMU isnt worth the price.

Why go to CMU when you're paying more than Michigan and Vandy and are getting a worse BME/Pre-Med program? If I were in your shoes, I would pick Michigan.

i'd also go w/ michigan, and i agree w/ barrons that all the top 50 schools in engineering are good.

I would go with Vandy.

I'd go to Michigan or Vandy... with Michigan being first preference.

what bothers me about Michigan is how ugly the campus is and the 70% acceptance rate.

Go with CMU.

If want a major easier than engineering then take Vandy.

"what bothers me about Michigan is how ugly the campus is and the 70% acceptance rate."

When I visited, the campus didn't look ugly at all. The campus layout was very nice and there was quick shuttle transport between North and Central campus. Also, the facilities I toured were pretty nice. I suppose campus aesthetics could use a little work but apart from that, no complaints. About the 70% acceptance rate... Don't judge a school based on acceptance rates. Michigan is a large school so it can accomodate a lot more students. The student body there isn't worse than CMU's or Vanderbilt's. 90% of the student body at Michigan graduated in the top 10% of their HS class (77% - Vandy; 69% - CMU), and many have ivy resumes. If you go there you will find out that everyone's just as smart as you think you are.

dethinker, Michigan's campus is not "ugly". It isn't even average. It is one of the most impressive campuses. I agree it is not pretty, but it is very well laid out and the buildings are generally beautiful and well maintained. As for the 70% acceptance rate, don't let it dissuade you. First of all, Michigan accepts 50%-65% of applicants, not 70%, secondly, the average student at Michigan is as good as the average student at CMU or Vanderbilt.

Personally, I would recommend Michigan over Vanderbilt or CMU. It has the best overall reputation, the best academics and the most to offer. Besides, Ann Arbor is more intellectual, cosmopolitan and fun than Pittsburgh or Nashville and school spirit at Michigan is hard to duplicate.
