Michigan or Chapel Hill?

I got into the Arts and Literature schools of both Umich and UNC Chapel Hill however Im in quite a dilemma now as I have been rejected from the Ross School of Business in Umich (preferred admission) and my prospects of getting an assured admission into the Kenan Flagler school of Business in UNC is extremely shady.

I called the admissions officer for undergrads at kenan flagler and she told me that she couldnt say whether id be offered admission or not because the number of seats they were offering for assured admission were extremely tight and that they had given first preference to the early applicants first (i did RD)

What is my fallback option if I do get rejected from Kenan Flagler? Is there anyway i could still get a BBA?

If i do choose UNC, what type of extracurricular activities can i take up that may seem appealing to the admission officers at Kenan Flagler?

My backup plan is babson for bba or ucla for economics, however I really do not want to go to either of these schools. Ive been waitlisted for CMU and NYU (stern) but the prospects of getting into both of those schools are quite slim.

Help is very much appreciated, thank you

When you called Kenan Flagler, did the admissions officer tell you when they would make/announce their decisions regarding Assured Admission? Like you, I am a RD candidate anxious to hear.

In any case, at both Michigan and UNC, the vast majority of members of their business school transfer in, since assured admissions is always quite limited. Just because you didn’t get into preferred admissions at Ross is not indication that you could not transfer in later, as most of their students do.

I don’t know what they look for, obviously, but I would suspect that GPA and leadership are probably the two big items. Much like college admittance, I think that it probably does not matter so much what activities you do as long as you show a high level of commitment and involvement to said activity.

I heard that AAP offers for RD were going out this week. As noted above, AAP is only one way of getting into Kenan-Flagler. The normal manner in which most UNC students get into the KF BSBA program is through the application process in your sophomore year. Approximately 55% of applicants were offered admittance this year. To be competitive, you will need approximately a 3.6 or better and your KF pre-reqs done (with good grades in them). There will be other factors considered (ex: interview, etc), but, strong grades at UNC is a must.

At least at UNC, aren’t assured admissions essentially a negligible percentage of K-F undergrads? It seems silly to worry too much about not being selected. Getting into the business school once you’re at UNC really isn’t as difficult as people make it sound–just make decent grades your first couple years, do an internship or something, and make sure to take the pre-reqs. Voila, you’re in the business school.

Yes, AAP is a small number … approx 30 / year

I was actually deciding between U michigan and chapel hill too. I definetely decided on chapel hill for a couple reasons, but surprisingly theyre not academic if that helps. Chapel hill is a beautiful campus with really nice weather compared to freezing michigan, the colors are light blue and white which is so pretty, the community of the student body on chapel hill is probably the most friendly and genuinely nice group of people you’ll ever meet and I went to an accepted student’s reception for chapel hill and met a lot of alumni who were very pursuasive. there are an endless amount of student organizations, the connections you make with people are almost like family, the sports are incredible, and who wouldn’t want to be a tar heel! On top of everything though Chapel hill is about 15k cheaper for out of students =]
