Michigan or Cornell

Like a person who scored a 750 vs an 800 is superior in inteligence to the other is laughable, these schools have very similar students as far as drive but I still argue based on the folks we know, that the atmosphere is different at each school.

Both great schools. Daughter was admitted to both and has decided to attend Cornell. One observation she made was that when we visited UM almost everyone we met was from Michigan. She did some research and found that 50% of undergrads were from Michigan. She saw Cornell as a more diverse student body. I think the Ivy League thing had something to do with it too. I should note that her mom is a Michigan Alum so she had plenty of pull towards UM.
Not productive to try and parse out which is “better”, that is a subjective question based on what is important to you.

So what you are saying is that it was important for your daughter not to be around too many students who hail from the state of Michigan, right? That honestly sounds a bit elitist to me. Btw, 31% of the entering freshman class at Cornell are from New York and almost 50% are from the middle Atlantic states (which of course includes NY, PA, and NJ). If you add in New England, Cornell is made up of about about 60% of students from the northeast. Sounds a lot like Michigan to be honest. Also Michigan and UVA are the only two elite public universities with such a high percentage of OOS students. Perhaps she should have researched a bit more, if “diversity” was a big reason she decided not to attend.

“ I think the Ivy League thing had something to do with it too.”

I think the Ivy League thing had a lot to do with it. Not that I blame her at all; Cornell is a fantastic school.

Love the Michigan VS Cornell comparisons… Sort of like comparing Apples well to… Apples… Lol :)>-

Fit, feel and do you want more East coast VS Midwest… I guess…

I agree with rjkofnovi. Cornell is obviously more geographically diverse than Michigan, but not by much. 35% of Cornell undergraduate students are NY residents, while 60% are from the Northeast/Mid Atlantic. At Michigan, 50% are residents of Michigan and 70% are Midwestern.

Anyway, one cannot go wrong with Cornell, it is an amazing university.
