Michigan Pros and Cons

Me thinks Nirvana is making fun of me. sob So maybe ghetto is a bit overstated. I think I heard one of the Regents use that term a few years ago. At any rate...there's your typical run-down student housing on the edge of campus. Students complain about what you get for what you pay in rent. But students are at the landlords' mercy. To be fair, students aren't always the best tenants. But aside from this and the weather, Ann Arbor is a great place to live. Sports, music, lectures, movies, book stores, cafes, restaurants... For a town of about 115,000 people, Ann Arbor offers a lot of big city entertainment and amenities.

dude I'm not making fun of you...I'm glad Ann Arbor isn't perfect and "Princeton-ish"...the ghetto and run down sections give it character and street cred. It proves that we can be just as ghetto as OSU and MSU, but at the same time we are academically superior, and with things like NY Philharmonic coming to Hill Auditorium, more high class. Plus I hear MSU has a huge "popped collar problem" so that automatically takes away from their street cred. Most of the people I have met here are real, although I have met a few white prep chotch pop-collar *s that * me off

Nirvana, I think your definition of "ghetto" differs from Topcat's and mine. To me, a place is ghetto if you feel unsafe. I have walked all over Ann Arbor (including East University) at all hours of the night and never felt unsafe. Of course, there is crime in Ann Arbor and I would never recommend anybody walk alone at night, anywhere in the world. But Ann Arbor does not have an area that I would lable "ghetto". The closest thing to Ghetto in the area would be Ypsilanti! LOL

For that matter we are all misusing the term. It means a place where one group of people, generally if not always a minority, lives. Ghetto has such a broad street definition, so it can be used on multiple levels. For example, I am from Indianapolis, and the town directly north is called Carmel, which is VERY rich, white, and republican, and it is refered to as the "golden ghetto"...nice play on words

You young people!!! LOL Oh well, thanks for ejumacating me! (Bushism)! hehe
