Michigan Residency/Ohio High School

I couldn’t find any information in the forum on this question, so thanks in advance for any help.

We live in southern Michigan and will have for all four years of high school for my oldest. I am employed in Ohio, and my spouse has a part-time job in Michigan. We don’t own any other real property in other states. But, our oldest will graduate from a Catholic high school in Toledo Ohio, right over the border from our house.

We live, vote, drive, and pay taxes only in Michigan, but I am concerned that my job in Ohio and my oldest’s graduation from an Ohio high school will result in UM-AA classifying us as non-residents. The UM-AA website is very unclear on what determines residency in these kinds of situations.

Has anyone else been in this situation? What was the result? Would sending our youngest to local Michigan public schools help with our residency case? The problem is the good Catholic schools are all 10-15 minutes away in Ohio.

You have a very interesting situation. The Board of Regents guidelines for residency are below. I have not read through them completely, but it’s obvious you would have to qualify under section 1. You can always file an appeal if you are denied. I hope it works out for you. And yes, sending your youngest to the MI public schools would be a huge help - if he/she wants to go to UM and is a good candidate. (But I’m not sure I would ever send my kid to a specific public school just so he/she could get into a specific college - there are many great schools out there for every kid - but that’s just my personal opinion.)

Friends whose kids went away for high school also had to file. Parents live in Michigan…kids lived and attended schools in other states. Just file the paperwork. All of my friends’ kids got residency.
