I have received admission to the University of Michigan Ross School of Business as a pre-admit. Along with this, I just got into to the Olin School of Business at Washington University in St. Louis. I am now trying to decide between these two programs and which has better job placement/internships. This is a tough decision as WASHU ranks higher overall, yet Michigan has one of the top business programs (ranked higher than Olin dependent on which ranking you are looking at). Any help or insight is much appreciated.
I think you need to ask yourself where you will be happier… where do you see yourself fitting in and enjoying yourself? Do more searching on that. Visit the campuses. Talk to students. Focus less on job placement/internships between the two programs; they will be near identical. Both are wonderful programs. Professional goals are only important so far as you are happy.
Oh, and go blue. All the way.
Two excellent choices so you can’t go wrong. Is one more affordable than the other? Do you prefer one environment to the other?
What exactly does pre-admit mean? That you’re not a direct admit to the b-school and you’ll have to apply for it in a year or two?
@philbegas A pre-admit for UM means you have been admitted directly into the Ross b-school. If you don’t have the pre-admit then you have to apply after a year and it is very competitive to get in. Having that pre-admit is a big positive.
Oh so pre-admit = direct admit @happy1
Those are both great programs and If I were you I’d pick whichever one you thought you’d be happier at and whichever is more affordable.
@happy1 Both are will be around the same price as I am out of state. Also, Both environments would be fine. I know that Michigan is considerably larger, but that doesn’t matter too much.
Olin
I am going to Olin starting in august and I also got into ross as a pre admit but when I visited the campuses, washu was so beautiful and Michigan was just kind of meh. All the beds at washu are tempurpedic and then he food is so good and overall its just an amazing environment to be in!!

You need to choose the one that is right for you. However, if you were my student, I think Michigan can open more doors, and I would be nudging you toward Michigan, especially with a pre-admit. Michigan’s business reputation and placement are excellent.
WashU is a good school, but I do not see it as at the level of Michigan outside of Medicine or pre-med. While WashU ranks above Michigan in USNews, I think they focus on taking steps to enhance that specific ranking. Having said that, our WashU visit was very positive, well organized, and they really have a lovely campus and I can see how that might sway some students.
jmho, and I am a Sparty, so you know i am not going to puff up Michigan when they don’t deserve it. lol
I’d go Ross if I were you. At either school you will get a top notch education, but Michigan is truly a special place. Ann Arbor has so much to offer and the UM student body is among the most enthusiastic in the nation. You won’t have more fun anywhere else, and you won’t get a better education anywhere else (maybe wharton)
