Hello! I got into MSU’s BFA acting program, but I want to know more about it. how rigorous is it? is it conservatory style? do people have good experiences with it? Is it a very competitive program to get into? I’m not sure if it would be because they only had on campus auditions. will this program be similar to other standard BFA programs? If you have any insights please let me know!
My D would also like more information about this program. She was impressed at the auditions/tour!
Hello there! I am a current Junior BFA Acting Student in MSU’s program! Our acting program has required acting, movement, voice, and theatre history classes that we are required to take. However, there is a lot of freedom for individuality and encouragement to cultivate your major to be as unique to you as an artist as possible. For example, I myself am a BFA Acting Major, but also have a Musical Theatre Minor and an Arts and Cultural Management Minor. So far in my time at MSU, aside from my required classes, I have been able to receive Shakespeare and Classical acting training, Film/Media Acting training, Auditioning training, Musical theatre private lessons, Musical theatre ensemble, duet, and solo classes, as well as event planning and marketing classes for Arts and Cultural Management. It might sound like a lot, but I promise there will be time in your semesters to pick from all of these various classes offered without overwhelming yourself. I myself have enjoyed every single class I have taken and love our department. Having the freedom and encouragement to learn various different skills and styles of acting has allowed me to become an incredibly well-rounded performer, which I know isn’t always allowed in other programs. There is a really motivating and inspiring energy and culture from all of the students and faculty in our department to strive to learn more and support each other, which is one of my favorite parts. In terms of getting in, it varies from year to year. Some class sizes are bigger than others and it really depends on how many people they are looking to take that specific year, but I’m sure if you give it your all and be yourself, you will be amazing! I hope this information was helpful and answered your questions. If there is anything more specific that would be helpful to know, please feel free to comment back
Best,
Isa (student at MSU!)
