Michigan State University, the school I plan to attend in 2010 I'am surprise by all the news being release. I've been hearing/ reading about Michigan State University often now, and the majority of the time, if not all... it's bad news. Like a student being attacked, harrassed, or robbed.
What's going on? Would you say the school is less safe than it was last year? I've been told that many students who don't attend the school like to hang out on the campus, could it be those who are not students causing these problems?

Can not find the other reports at the moment, although can anyone give me a insight of what's going on?
-Thanks

To be honest, I wouldn't be too worried. This happens on all college campuses. It happens at UMich a lot too, but only state gets stories because UMich is seen as the "serious" school and State as the "party" school. No worries, I have many friends there and they are completely comfortable walking around campus at 3 AM.

Thanks, it would be nice to feel safe walking around campus at 3am etc... I visit the MSU website often and they said crime has been decreasing, although they are working on assults which has been record to increase. These latest assults will only do worst.... I still see MSU has a safe and good school, just wondering for a insight from students on campus.

There are ways to get around campus at night. You can call for volunteers to walk with you at night, phone numbers to get someone to pick you up and take you to your dorm, some buses. The problem is that the students don't think to use these services. There are safety phone on campus. For those of you thinking of moving to the east side, Hubbard, Holmes, Akers, and such, there are no street lights so if you ride a bike at night make sure you have reflectors and wear clothing that can be seen.

You also have to remember that there are 40,000 students. MSU is the size of a city. It has it's own police. Things happen. For the little bit of bad stuff that happens, a lot of good stuff happens too.

During the day there are thousands of people around and not much happens. I have been there many times although I never attended college there. I use to work across from the campus. But being out alone late at night or attending parties with drinking makes it more dangerous but you will find that in any city. Don't set down a backpack or computer and turn your back while doing something, day or night.
Cedar Village is right next to the campus and may be torn down in the next year or two to make new shops and apts.
I use to go to MSU's Planetarium and see shows at night.

Yeah I know, I only stay about 10 minutes from the school although I thought Cedar Village was just built... or is that campus village apartments? You know the ones right next to Brody, coming off of grand river/ michigan ave.
I personally thought it would be okay at 2am to walk through MSU campus... but seems like everyone says it's not safe like that anywhere. Although since many say MSU is like a little town, it's also more like a closer community with many police officers etc... which surprises me of the news on Tv I've seen lately.

You are thinking Campus Village. Cedar Village is on Grand River more towards Hagadorn St. It does seem like there is a lot in the news about MSU right now though.

Crime is not noticeable on campus at all for me. Just walk with other people when it gets dark and any problems are essentially avoided! Plus the police are everywhere. Certain parts of campus are not lit very well though

People I know who attend the school doesn't notice crime much either. Although the thing is, that it is there. Whether it's in small or large numbers thats the issue....
-Thanks everyone for replying, I would appriciate more information about MSU whether is on crime, your own experience(s), and safety levels etc...
