Michigan State vs UMass Amherst

I am trying to decide between the two of these schools right now and I am finding it difficult because I really like both of them. I would be going in as a mathematics major at UMass and a Statistics major at Michigan State. I want to go to a sociable school that has a lot of spirit and a strong community. Any information (pros or cons) about either of the schools that would help me make my decision would be greatly appreciated!

Got to the one which is cheaper (particularly if one is in-state for you).

Can’t go wrong with MSU…like all Big Ten school or major sports college they brain wash you with Green and white… went to their campus to drop off my kid last year and loved the campus… first time I attend a major college football game with tailgating and 75k fans was amazing

If cost is the same MSU gives you that typical football/basketball and hockey (although Umass is ranked second in ice hockey )

I agree with the financial analysis. However, UMass Amherst is really strong in these types of majors. And if you have any interest in informatics or AI they are one of the most elite options available.

Check out the “campus reel” video of a day in the life of a student from each school. Maybe you will ll see a bit more.

They are both larger schools but Michigan state is much larger. 5000 acres and 39000 undergrads. University of Massachusetts at Amherst is 1500 acres and 23000 undergrads. So nearly half the students .

People tend to think it’s a big school because for New England it is and tiny Amherst college is a mile away. But comparatively it’s a very reasonable size or smallish state flagship university.
