UMass Amherst versus Michigan State University, East Lansing versus

Dear friends, My son (international student) has got an admission in UMass Amherst in college of engineering and in Michigan State University, East Lansing. He wants to do Engineering and prefers Mechanical/Mechatronics, IoT, AI and Machine Learning. We are confused between the 2 schools. Both are large. Should we prefer them or look for other schools where he has also got admission like UT Dallas, Colarado State Univ, University of Utah or Missouri Institute of Science and Technology. He prefers to go in engineering and we would prefer that he decides after exploring the options. Can someone please suggest which school would be better amongst what has been stated? Thanks.

@anu_ma my son goes to Michigan State although big the engineering freshman live together and some classes are in their dorm. We are International and were worried about the size but he loves it. I think MSU is ranked higher than Umass and from what I see he gets a lot of research opportunities and MSU has a lot of research going on with the car industry. For us we picked MSU for the brand and are happy that he is enjoying it. Lots of international kids (I think around 6000+)

thanks for the revert.

in Umass my son has got a confirmed offer for college of engineering. Yes, the major gets decided based on the GPA. But in Michigan State University, the admission is given but even admittance into college of engineering would depend on the academics of 6 core courses Besides that, the major would have additional GPA needs like 3.1 for Mechanical engineering. Hence, I am little doubtful and skeptical in MSU, as my son definitely wants to get into engineering. He can be flexible on the major but in the engineering line. Can someone please advise if we are thinking in the right direction?

Also, he is interested in Areas like IoT, Artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc which are multi disciplinary. He is not decided on doing Computer engineering but is more keen in mechanical, mechantronics, etc where also above can be applied. Requesting friends to pls advice and share views

Look for YouTube videos on AI research at both universities… google what research they are doing…

A lot of schools have the minimum requirement after sophomore year… it is stressful I must say… at MSU my son needs a 2.9 for chem eng.

How is UTD (UT Dallas) compared to UMass Amherst for Engineering (Undergrate) considering internship and OPT opportunities. I have heard positive reviews for UMass Amherst but since Dallas is a bigger city, I thought to ask and get advice.
