Michigan Tech vs Iowa State

I have narrowed down my college search to Michigan tech and Iowa State and am having a hard time making a decision. I am looking to go into engineering, not exactly sure which type yet. On an academic level, which is better, Michigan Tech or Iowa State?

For engineering, Iowa state is ranked higher. But overall the universities are ranked about the same (115 vs 124). So I would say that they are roughly about the same overall

my brother went to iowa state for engineering and had many career offers before graduating and absolutely loved everything about isu. i dont know much about michigan tech but id say iowa state

Have you toured both? We toured Iowa State specifically for Engineering and I was very impressed. Unlike other colleges that we looked at, it had separate building for EACH type of Engineering, they have a first-year Engineering undecided class that helps you narrow down what you want to specialize in and, if I recall properly, you are directly admitted into the program rather than having to formally apply as a Junior like many other schools.

Iowa State will be the classic big school environment: larger town (Ames is around 60,000, I think; Houghton, MI I had to Google (population: under 8,000). Iowa state has 30,000 undergrads: great if you want that traditional State U. experience. Tech is much smaller: the number of undergrads practically matches the size of the town! Iowa State means Big 12 football (and ISU had a pretty good season in 2017!). Ames is a nice town and much more cosmopolitan than people realize; it too often is seen as second tier to Iowa City, the very definition of an amazing college town. Ames holds up pretty well, though.

I hope this helps. I’m an English major. You could lock me in a room with a simple task like “Add 20 + 20” with a week to figure it out. After a week (complete with scratch paper filled out and hair torn out), my answer would be, “Um. 58? 36?” I’m no engineer, but hopefully I’ve given you some social/town aspects to consider.
