I am interested in both schools. Been accepted into engineering at ISU. I’ve been told ISU has a good national reputation. I’ve been told Iowa is more of a well rounded and fun environment. I am a good student and want a good career, but I am a social person too. Can all these rival school’s alums give me some straightforward advice? I am interested in Chem E, Materials E, or Mech E.
It really depends on what you want. Iowa is smaller and so the engineering students in each major are more close knit. That can really be good for the beginning core courses.
Iowa State is much bigger in engineering but also has greater resources and connections. That is evident by the Caterpillar ME lab and the Haas Machining Centers. They have a significant Mat E lab and a lot of research by Ames Lab which is sponsored by US Government.
Iowa State has more connections when it comes to placement at graduation. You will have to do more searching on your own at graduation.
I would say it really depends on if you prefer a small school environment or do not mind a large school experience and also how important is hands on application of what you learned important, also how important are Career Services for you.
Both are good choices for different reasons! Good Luck!
