Michigan vs Case Western for Nursing

Do you understand that this is a nursing student?

Undergraduate nursing students get hundreds of clinical hours as part of their program. It is a core and required part of any nursing program, and they will have hundreds of hours — more than 1,000 at some schools — as part of their nursing education.

Where they are able to do clinical work is an important consideration for any nursing student.

I don’t understand what you are questioning.

I do understand this. And I agree that CWRU is the better choice…considering there is a hospital on campus, and three others which CWRU has affiliations with.

Michigan has the University of Michigan Medical Center and CS Mott Children’s Hospital ON campus, and partnerships with over 600 other sites in the state and region where nursing students can do clinicals. Case Western has affiliations with over 200 sites for clinical work.

The decision is deeper than UM Medical vs Cleveland Clinic, though. She needs to compare class sizes, concentrations offered, ability to minor/study abroad/get credit for AP classes, student/faculty ratios, NCLEX pass rates, technology/hands on training available, job placement…and most importantly in this instance, total cost/affordability.

These are both top nursing programs. Michigan is typically ranked in the top 5 on most lists and CWRU isn’t far behind…they are essentially tied, but that doesn’t mean the programs are the same or that CWRU is better because it’s closer to Cleveland Clinic.

To the OP, while the allure of a rah rah school like Michigan is understandable, the additional $140,000 you would be somehow paying is too much. That amount of money could pay for your masters at Michigan or just about anywhere else in the world. Did you have any in-state options that could combine the strength of these programs, the cost of Case, and the atmosphere of Michigan?

@CCName1 i completely agree with you.

Case. Period. (And I am a nursing instructor). Not a single employer will care you went to Case over UMich. And you will not get paid more because you went to UMich over Case.

You are 6 or 7 years away from even considering traveling and who knows what the need or salary will be for travelers by then. Social media shows travel nursing as glamorous but the reality of it can be much, much different. You may come to realize that your mental health and social life may come before your paycheck.

Case is in the same class as Michigan and you got an awesome scholarship. Go for it!
Once you’ve borrowed the 5.5K, will your parents borrow the remaining 10K for you? If so, wouldn’t they be able to lend you the money from their own money (to avoid the high interest cost&fees)?

Also, check for progression / weed-out grade / GPA requirements to stay in the program. They may be found in the nursing major handbooks.

I just wanted to point out that while Michigan is a large public school, in my D’s graduating Class of 2022, there were approximately 136 +/- nursing students. While classes may have grown a bit since 2018 when D started Michigan, the nursing classes are small.

For the record, D18 was in LSA, but she lived with 2-3 nursing students.
