I’m not an expert on this but most colleges do not allow you to have a microwave in your room unless they rent it to you. My S will just have a fridge in his dorm room (which we will purchase). He can go to the kitchen to microwave if he needs something heated up. My D will be a junior this year (at another school) and has always just had a fridge in her room. This was never a problem for her. Hope this helps.

the first bullet point under what NOT to bring says only approved microfridges are allowed. I am 99% sure approved means that you have to rent one. I also think that Martinigirl is right, the fridge is probably more useful than the microwave in the room itself, so you might want to go that route. There are no restrictions on fridge only, I don’t believe.

A microfridge has one power cord from which both the microwave and refrigerator are run. It draws less power which is why they are the only ones allowed. There are several manufacturers and I have seen several brands in Tulane dorm rooms, so there must be some tolerance for this by the RA staff. These units are expensive to purchase, like $500 but you will be in the dorms for at least two years so you need to weigh cost/benefit. The communal microwaves are not cleaned particularly well so I wouldn’t count on that, if your hallmate lets something explode in it on Friday evening, you won’t want to cook in it until Monday. I would question the $59 Walmart solution, it seems far too cheap to offer the functions.

Yes, the mini fridges are fine. Lots of people rent the microfridges (wait til you see the truckloads of them being delivered!) so you can borrow a neighbor’s if need be. Stick with the fridge. The microwaves in the common areas get pretty gross pretty quickly…
