Both boys had all A’s at mid year. Son had about 3.85 unweighted friend had 4.0. Not great but far from bad. Several AP’s. Things do work out for best, both had great college experiences Son’s legacy letter didn’t make it better. I called for info and got a real jerk. Son had no interest in calling. SC continues to ask me for money, they are wasting their postage.

Has anybody who received the midyear request gotten accepted? There are many people claiming they got accepted without receiving a midyear letter, but not vice versa.

My situation seems very similar to jbourne’s; I also thought I would get a major scholarship. I took 6 APs last semester and got all As, I maintain 4.0 UW and after last semester a 4.7 weighted, rank first in my class, and my 2240 SAT with 800 MII and USH scores are not horrible. However, I am starting to think my subjective areas were “sketchy” for USC.

I went through Questbridge’s national college match program and used all my essays to explain my low income situation because at that time my family income was barely below Questbridge’s proverbial 60K income line, so I wanted to emphasize my low income background. With these essays I became a Questbridge finalist, but I did not realize that they might place me at a disadvantage with colleges. Even though USC is need-blind, these essays blatantly emphasizes my lack of money and might have been excessively somber in the eyes of a college admission officer. Also, the Questbridge application allowed me to list only 6 activities. Could these be possible issues?

mumur - in hindsight, I mistakenly thought being in the top 5% of the country in grades, test scores, etc. would get you in almost any university and they would be knocking down my door to have me! I also applied for mech engineering at all my choices which I think hurt a great deal. My EC’s could also have been better. Anyway… at UC Davis now and on the bright side, am saving lots of money.

johnrevka - your stats look awesome and are way better than mine. Hope you get in and they come up with some scholarships for you.

The HS guidance counselor had a standard policy of sending out midyear grades for ALL students if they did well. That being the case, I can’t recall that S got any such request because the GC had probably already sent out the grades. I believe they were good & he was an accepted NMF Presidential engineering scholar.
