Mid-Year Grades

I recieved a letter in mid-December from UD stating that the “high-volume” of applicants for my major would not allow me to hear back until mid-February at the latest. It also stated that I could send additional test scores (the only thing I haven’t sent is my ACT scores because they are almost the same as my SAT scores), complete the optional writing prompts (which I did before I submitted my application in October), and send mid-year grades if I wanted to, but it was optional. I was planning on sending my mid-year grades if I hadn’t heard by now anyway. About a month ago, my portal changed to “We are awaiting additional information prior to making a final decision on your application.” This made me extremely worried because as an in-state applicant I expected it to be much easier for me to get accepted, but this message has made me fearful of rejection. My guidance counselor sent my mid-year grades over the Common App today and it now shows up as “Submitted”. I have a friend who recieved the same “High-Volume” letter as I did in December (we both applied at the same time for Biology) and he was accepted last week. He didn’t send his mid-year grades but I have to.

I’m really worried that I’ll be rejected. A woman from admissions at the tour I attended stated that Delawarians have a 90+% acceptance rate at UD. I would have never thought that I would be in that unfortunate 10%. I have good grades, a tough course load, competed and placed nationally in a dental related competition (3x), am a state officer of an organization, and a member of NHS, NTHS, Key Club, HOSA, and Project Unify/Special Olympics. I’ve already been accepted into one of my top two schools, JMU, and I really want to get into my other top school, UD.

Now that my mid-year grades have been submitted, what should I expect? Should I expect a response in the next week or month? Should I be preparing myself for a rejection? It’s such a horrible feeling. All of my friends that applied to major in Communications, Pre-Vet, Education, etc. heard in about 8 weeks. I applied (for Biology) in mid-October and have been stressing out since I got that letter in December.

I’m currently the definition of stress and anxiety. Please help!
Thanks.

Although you did not post your GPA and test scores IMHO, based on what you did present, that your acceptance to UD is likely and I would guess in the near future. It is my understanding that UD got a much larger number of applicants than usual for the biology major this year and this may account for the delay in your getting a final decision. Apparently the word is starting to get around about the excellent Pre-Med and Pre-Dental Programs that UD offers. Although around 90% of Delawarians who apply are accepted to UD about 20% are accepted into the Associate’s Degree Programs that UD runs in several locations in the state. If these students do well in the Associate’s Degree Programs they can then move to the main campus in Newark to complete their Bachelors Degree. Best wishes to you. You should hear soon. Hang in there.

@Mwallenmd‌ Thank you so much for the response! I applied for Biology at the Newark campus and plan on being in the Pre-Dental program. Today my Common App showed that my mid-year year grades were “Downloaded”. I really hope to hear back soon! I’ve had a few more people tell me that they were accepted recently and I really just can’t wait to find out what my decision is! Should I expect my portal to change first or would I get an acceptance/rejection letter in the mail before it is updated? Thank you again for your response, it’s been a really long couple of months and your response was really helpful.

Unfortunately there is no definitive answer to your question. Some people find out first on their portal, others by mail. There does not appear to be any rhyme or reason to this. Again good luck. Make sure you hook up with the pre-professional program as soon as you start. They really provide great direction and support but you are going to have to give it your best effort+.

@Mwallenmd‌ Thank you so much for your help. I’ll continue to keep my head up and hopefully I’ll hear back soon! I’ll try to update you whenever the time comes.

@Mwallenmd‌ I recieved my acceptance letter today! Thank you so much for your help and encouragement.

Congratulations. You are very welcome. Now comes the hard part. Assuming you choose UD when you go to NSO make sure you let your advisor know you are interested in becoming involved in the pre-professional program (you can also check it out on UD"s website if you have not done so already. Best wishes to you in your future studies.
