Middle-Eastern American

Is it advisable to put down one's race if he is Middle-Eastern? Could that affect chances in any way?

Didn’t think about that but I’m doing it. My dad is from Israel, and a good chunk of my family on both sides is from Israel and surrounding countries, so I put it down (in addition to 1 or 2 other ethnicities/races that applied to me). Personally I don’t plan on changing it, because it’s the truth.

If you want to be completely honest you should leave it.

You aren’t required to put your race down. I would only put if it wouldn’t affect me negatively in any way.

Well I think only you can make the decision. I don’t think they’d believe you to be an etremist or terrorist, as you seem to be implying. As you can see from my case, you can be from any nationality in the Middle East, and I think adcoms would realize this.

It won’t make any difference. Middle Eastern is considered caucasian.

@Erin’s Dad I think he’s implying that it may be seen negatively, given some people’s current views of the Middle East.

And though it says Caucasian/Middle Eastern on the Common App, it does then clarify if you are Middle Eastern itself. So the OP is wondering whether to mark off being Middle Eastern or whether to forgo reporting his race/ethnickty

I don’t think it would affect you negatively; if it was up to me that would boost your chances since it’s more diversity, but I don’t know if that’s actually the case. But if it makes you at all nervous to put it down, you may as well leave that section blank since it’s not required.

I don’t think it would be viewed negatively. and if it is, it wouldn’t be worth going to that college anyways

Stressedoutt—Good point.
