middle of nowhere?

might sound like an awkward question but... how would you get to the closest cities (rochester, syracuse) "which are both like 1-2 hours away"? a friend's car? are there buses that travel between cities..? i've never been to the states..

How about Toronto? How many hours away?

It’s about 4 hours…not too bad lol

on the bright side, you won't be distracted by going out every weekend and you can bond with your friends in good ol ithaca =]

Cooperstown has a population of 2,000. The City of Ithaca has a population of nearly 30,000.

sillyrabbit: yes, I know about FIT, Pratt, etc., but the problem is that I am not 100% sure I'd want to go into fashion design. I'd love to take fashion design courses, maybe minor in it, learn more about it, possibly pursue a related career like fashion journalism or opening a fashion related business, but to go to a school like FIT and do well, you have to be 100% into your work. That's something idk if I'm ready to do or will be ready to do within the next 2 years.

That is why I need a school in which I can get a great academic education, so that I can pursue other fields I'm interested in, like sociology and anthropology, and be successful in those fields, but also a school which offers courses relating to fashion, which I'd be interested in as a related career or just as a hobby.
I want to be able to have the option of pursuing both fields.

redcrimblue...that is SO COOL. haha. I didn't know that. LOVE the book.

odyssey...lol that is VERY GOOD to know. :P

on our way to cooperstown, our coach bus broke down...and we were seriosuly in the middle of NOWHERE. one of our teachers walked to the only house down the highway, located like up this little hill, and came back like 30 min later with this horribly sad looking farmer (we called him Farmer Joe), who rode a tractor.
He fixed the bus for us. :)
Apparently, the tractor was his CAR! :/
that was a funny day.

oh yeah. A good thing is that I'd be able to write a great "why do you want to go to Cornell" essay. lol. I can just say I want a inspiring academic climate and a school that will provide me with excellent resources to do well in social-sciences related fields, and also want to pursue fashion (which will be shown as I plan to sell some of my pieces online starting this summer). Therefore Cornell is one of the only places which will allow me to pursue both my academic and creative passions. :D

Its past the country, its in the middle of BumF**k, about 50 miles north of hickville.

It's still awsome though.

I would want to live in the middle of nowhere! I am sick of city life, pollution, heavy traffic, airplanes, massive buildings, land devoid of trees .......I just dont get your concerns!

haha ktoto, if I'm looking into pursuing a fashion-related career, you might assume I love to shop.
which I do.
Not living near an Anthropologie, Nordstroms, or Free People? = Not living at all. :P

And for my anthropology/sociology side....museums and such.

Alamode, it doesn't really sound like Cornell is such a good fit for you if you consider not having your favorite shops around to be "not living at all". Cornell isn't the first place that comes to mind when one thinks of the fashion industry. Where would you shop to get all the supplies needed? The garment districts of NYC and Philly are a pretty long ways away! Good luck wherever you end up.

I agree with you ktoto!

zimmer07...well, I WAS exaggerating about the "not living at all" thing, haha, but yeah, I would have to visit Ithaca to really know whether I'd be able to be happy there.

I just can't seem to find a school nearby or in a city, with a great academic reputation, which offers concentrations relating to fashion.
:(

During the school year Ithaca has about 30,000 residents while there are about 30,000 college students (13,000 Cornell undergrads, 7,000 Cornell grads, and 10,000 Ithaca students). This makes a 1:1 ratio for resident:college student. I'd say that's pretty cool. 60,000 people living in one area is not at all rural. This is a GIANT step up from wat I'm used to lol. Try having cows and sheep n stuff roaming around outside ur highschool lol. Cornell is def awesome. Cornell itself is a little city...20,000 people is a good amount and I'm sure ull always have things to do either in Cornell or in Ithaca or even Ithaca College. Shopping gucci n stuff might be a little harder tho since Ithaca is kinda out of the mainstream, anti-establishmentish. It's still a great time tho! Quant little college town. Wait for gomestar to give his quote about it costing a ton of money to vacation on the finger lakes, but we get to go to college right there in the middle of a mini-paradise. It's a good quote. Wait for it...

i know theres no airport, but i hope everything else necessary is in ithaca, like banks, chain restaurants, malls, courts, golf courses, bowling alleys, supermarkets, all that stuff. ithaca has all that stuff....RIGHT?

also, this is more on a personal basis, since im korean, but are there any korean restaurants or supermarkets in ithaca?

They actually do have an airport, Tompkins airport and you can find other stuff by going to this site…
http://www.visitithaca.com/dining/dining.cfm

I know that golf is offered as a PE class. Not sure where they play. I think the class may do a spring break trip south or something - no wait, I think that was the PE scuba diving class.

i wouldn't mind being at cornell at all, and im seriously considering it. i was just wondering is it hard to get an internship or a co-op since ithaca isn't exactly boston or new york. o and im engineering.

Engineering has a department for getting co-ops. recruiters from various major companies like intel, IBM, AMD, bank of America, and even Johnson and Johnson come every semester to look for students for co-ops and eventually jobs. If you want to get a co-op, then most likely you will.

Ok…as compared to some places, the population is pretty good… think about all the peace and beauty…ahhh lol oh and there’s always the study abroad option, which sounds sooo great… lol
