Middlebury vs. Carleton

I know this will ultimately result in some sort of attack, but notice how everyone keeps referring to Carleton as “quirky”? There’s a reason for that. Well, at least based on my experience with Carleton graduates in grad school. They’re definitely “quirky”. Assuming “quirky” is a less than positive euphemism.
Yes, I recognize that’s not a statistically significant sample size, but in my sample it was 100% “quirky”.

Familiar with both schools-visited both in the last 2 years, and have children at Midd and family connections at Carleton.
I think you should pick based on cost, if there is a significant differential for you, and ease of travel. My s decided against Carleton because we can drive to Midd, and he likes to see us once in a while.
I love the Twin Cities, and they are a great place for students. But Carleton students actually spend most of their time at Carleton. Which I am very enthusiastic about, but wouldn’t decide based on accessibility to MSP.
I expect either school would do equally well at getting you into grad school for sciences, or med school.
You are a LUCKY person, congrats on your hard work!

Wow…I guess I missed the post made two years ago (before my S even started at Midd) where I was taken out of context. Good thing! And probably only made worse by the page break. I was referring to Study Abroad Programs. And I stand by that statement two years later that Midd seems to have less issues with transfer credits and travel abroad then what I’ve heard from friends at Carleton. And I live in the Twin Cities. Carleton is plenty famous here, and far more so than Middlebury since it’s literally down the street.

I don’t know the experience of Carleton students, I am sure it is fab. And honestly? Three years later I can honestly say that the worst thing about Middlebury is getting there from here. S has been stranded in Burlington and picked up by an entire Midd Family to be taken out to dinner, given a bed in which to sleep, a wake-up in the morning and a ride back to the airport to try again - three times. This is just the tip of the iceberg because the people of Vermont are simply the nicest people you’d ever want to meet. Seriously.

Carleton has a good % of Minnesotans, and while I’ve lived here for close to 27 years now, It’s a weird thing, this Minnesota Nice. Moving on. Getting to the airport however is about the same for kids at Midd to Burlington as it would be for Carleton. 45 minutes to an hour at most. I’m not sure if the school has shuttles during break or not. Midd has a bus and some independent services that are very reliable - which is important when your flight is getting into Burlington 6 hours later than it was supposed to.

Science. I can’t even begin to explain my deep admiration and appreciation to the Professors of Midd and the entire science program there. I literally can’t say enough about the facilities, the Professors, the support and the resources offered to students, the opportunities, etc etc. But it’s more than that… it’s every class he’s taken, every friend he’s made, every security office he’s lost by cutting through the cemetery… He has done well and more importantly, Midd has done well by him. It’s even harder to believe that he is almost a senior in college. It just flies. All of it.
