Military Sibling, Household Size?

One of my siblings who was living with us recently joined the Airforce and is now in a different state. Would I include him under household size?

No, don’t include him.

Hmm, well I got an email from my school saying my FAFSA got selected for verification and I have to submit a Dependent Verification Worksheet which is a form that asks me to write down all of my family members in the household. Then I have to submit the form to the financial aid office at my school. The size of household is correct on the FAFSA so I am wondering why I have to go through this process.

At least 30% of all FAFSAs received must be verified by the school. It’s more or less random. Just fill out the necessary forms, and all will be fine.

Verification can be for lots of reasons, is the size of your household the only thing they want to confirm?

Yes, the size of the household is the only thing they want confirmed which seemed a little weird to me considering I have the correct number on the FAFSA.

What is the household size you reported? Do you live with one or both parents? Did you complete a FAFSA last year, and if so … what was the HH size last year?

I just spoke with one of my friends and he said he has had to do this process every year and he’s never reported incorrect information for household size. Strange. Looks like I’ll just fill out the form and turn it in. Thanks everyone for the help!

If this is for last year’s FAFSA and your brother was living with your family on 12/31/2011, then you include him if he meets the criteria. Verification can happen to anyone. We got verified this year and have been told that all OOS students at this school are automatically so selected.

Oh I see. This is for the 2012/2013 FAFSA. He left in August 2011.

Ok. If he left in August of 2011, he is not a member of your household on 12/31/2011, so on the FAFSA that came out in 2012 for the 2012/13 school year, he does not count as a dependent or as member of your household. DId you include him as a household member for that FAFSA? If so, you have to change that information.

When you submit your verification paperwork, don’t include him in the family size. If you did include him on the FAFSA, the finaid folks will remove him based on your paperwork.
