I graduated from high school in 2005 and went to the University of Illinois. After 3 semesters there i had a terrible GPA and decided to join the military. After serving 4 years honorably in the US Air Force i separated and began attending community college. I have completed 2 semesters with a 4.0 gpa and i have applied to the University of Colorado as a transfer student. I am worried that my college transcripts from 7 years ago will not allow me to continue my education. Is there anyone out there that has admissions experience that might be able to give me some advice? I feel like a really strong essays and my recent college work and military experience speaks for itself... i'm reallly hope that will be weighted way more heavily than past college experience.

Your maturation and recent work will be valued. But it would be crazy for any college not to note, at least to some degree, an applicant’s poor academic performance – even in the distant past. That being said, I’d speak to their veteran’s liasons or “special students” advisors. Most colleges have programs to successfully intake students like you. Best of luck to you.

Many students mature in the military. Your most recent work will probably be weighted more than what happened 7 years ago. Good recommendation to speak with the non-traditional student advisor or Vet liaison. Good luck.

You might also want to post your thread on the Non-Traditional Students and/or Veterans forums (under College Admissions, Speciality Topics).
