Military Vet headed back to classroom full time

Hey there, currently I am an eight year veteran who has been out of the classroom since High School. I went to a CC out of high school, didn’t apply myself, did terrible then after one semester I enlisted in the military and honestly it was the best decision of my life. So, here I am eight years later eager as heck and ready to kick some tail in the classroom.

My question to you guys is basically can I transfer after two full semesters at a C.C? I have never been more motivated in my life to do something and I’m 100% confident in my ability to go back to school and knock what ever classes I take out of the park. After all, my livelihood is at stake, I’m not a kid and moving back in with my parents is definitely NOT an option. I will be attending using my post 9/11 G.I Bill and to those of you not familiar with it the housing allowance offered takes a HUGE burden off of my shoulders (and other vets alike) with making ends meet every month, this will also allow me to maximize my time focused on my studies.

I have my eyes set on a couple of SUNY schools so they’re not the super selective schools to get into (so I think?). Any one have an oppinion? Do you think my maturity and military experience would help? I have eight years of professional experience in the major I am dead set on studying and I fully plan on doing the absolute best I can in all classes that I take. I tried to fit in as much info as possible but if you think I forgot anything let me know, any info would be great! Thanks!

Ciao

You can transfer in after CC or you can enroll directly. I went right into a university after 5 years in the military. It was tough taking math classes after so long, and also getting used to studying again, but there’s no reason why you HAVE to go to a community college first if you don’t have to.

As far as maturity from the military helping you, absolutely. I was able to take things away from my college experience that others weren’t able to. I feel like I had a different understanding of the real world, so I had realistic expectations and my stress was lower than it would have been otherwise.

Oh, and that Post 9/11 is awesome! I only had it my last two years of school, but it was such a blessing!

NHuffer thank you for the response. That is what I am hearing from pretty much every vet that I speak to, they all urge me not to sell myself short. Right now I am in the process of applying to schools so my fingers are crossed.

Sweet! Is there a certain geographic area you’re looking at? Do you have an intended major yet?

Hey man, happy to hear you are heading back to school. So here is what I did, I didn’t have a great high school gpa. 2.0. But I did serve my country for 6 years and found a small school in Ohio that was yellow ribbon friendly, got a 3.5 and transferred to the University of Arkansas, got another 3.5 and transferred to Baylor University. I knew I wasn’t good enough to get into a good school right unless I played the ladder. Just know that if you are honest and qualified (which after 8 years you are more than) you will find the right school to give you an opportunity. Make the most out of it and you are going to do great.
