Millikin

D has been accepted to Millikin’s BFA MT. My wife went with her to auditions. D loves the school and this is one of her dream schools. Is this a quality program?(Wife & D say so) Do they cut students from the program? (W & D aren’t sure) So, Are there any other parents who’s S/D or students who attend Millikin with info about the program? I’m looking for that warm fuzzy feeling from some of you out there. It would be a great relief. Thanks for any help.

Dadwants, I did a quick search for you and found the name of a poster whose daughter attends Millikin. She is mama02girlz. Here's a link to a post of hers where she talks about students being 'redirected', which may be part of the information you're seeking.

Check post 194. Maybe if you sent her a PM she could answer your questions.

Hi DadWants Info - FYI - A few years back there was a poster "Peggy" - her D attended Milliken and loved it - you might find some info if you do a search, better yet, if she lurks maybe she'll answer your questions. Good luck and Break a leg to your D!!!

My d knows several MTs who go to Millikin and love it. I believe that at the end of your freshman year they determine whether or not you should continue in the BFA program or be placed elsewhere.

My D has two friends attending Millikin for MT...one a freshman, one a sophomore. At the end of last year, they 'redirected' at least half of the freshman MTers to other degree programs. I believe they call their system "hurdles"....like juries I suppose...from those they determine who will stay with the BFA program and who will be redirected.

I have to smile when I read the word "redirected." Does this mean "cut" from the program? Do most of the students who are culled from the MT program continue on in straight acting, or do they stay at the school in liberal arts, or do they leave? Anyone know?

I haven't lurked on this board in months, but decided to check things out this morning! Daughter is a Junior and still loves Millikin. Yes, they do "redirect" some students, but I don't think it's half. I know her roommate last year ended out in Vocal Preformance rather than MT. And when they redirect a student, I don't think they kick them out of the school. It's more like "I think your strengths like more in this direction than that one".

Last semester, Daughter took classes in directing and lighting, and has done some Stage Managing. She loves the support she gets from the other Theater students. And I love how helpful the staff is there. They have bent over backwards to answer any question I have, even to the point of returning phone calls from home.

Daughter is basically a dancer, and started off in all the top dance classes, even as a first-semester freshman. This worried me a bit. If she's that good, is she going to learn anything? The answer was YES! She says that classes "kick her butt", and her dancing has improved a lot!

Is it a top-tier school? No. It's not on the same level as CMU or CCM. But she's learning a lot, and is happy there.

If anyone is going to audition there, she is going to be one of the students that teaches the dance auditioin routine. Her name starts with an "S", and she's very tall.

Peg
who is back to the Univ of Michigan board, in the Engineering Dept!
