Hey everyone! I was accepted to Milton for the Class of '21 recently. I was wondering if someone could give me some insight regarding what it’s like to join Milton (or any boarding school in general) for 10th grade… is it significantly harder to adjust? Are you usually paired up with a roommate who also joined in 10th grade? Thank you!
Hello @bubbles42,
First of all congratulations on getting in! I am a current Milton student (Class of '21 as well), and I can definitely say that it will not be hard to adjust. I have a lot friends who were new sophomores this fall, and none of them seemed to struggle at all. You will, for sure, be able to make both day and boarder friends quickly as everyone in our class is mostly welcoming. I am a boarder right now, and getting a roommate depends on which dorm you get put in and how many doubles they have, but they will most likely give you a roommate. Please let me know if you have any other questions about our class or Milton in general!
Hi, I am accepted as 10th grader at Milton as boarding. Very exciting ! Are there many of us entering as 10th graders? How is transition and course enrollment at this entry point? I believe you have already chosen next year’s courses. How is Milton Saturday usually? idle enough or have lots of work to catch up with…This is one of the very few schools which don’t have Saturday classes but I understand Wednesdays have full day schedule, right ? Also, no finals? really?. Thanks.
Hi @Slalomkid23!
Since I’m also a student, I don’t really know that much about how many people are newcoming 10th graders etc. However, I do know that the course selection process is a little different for new students, since you’ll have to take a few tests that they’ll send you to determine your math and second language levels for your placements. Saturdays are usually no different than your usual weekend days back at home; although, it’s always good to try to catch up with work if you can. It’s not stressful at all. Wednesdays are half days, and we do not have finals but do have midterms. Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi, thanks for the candid answers. How is that chapel time? do we have some outings on Saturdays as group if boarding? How about study halls?
@Slalomkid23 Chapel is from 6:00-6:30 every Sunday and it’s nondenominational. You can pretty much do whatever you want on Saturdays, but there aren’t specific group outings. There are shuttles to malls and train stations, and you can go anywhere with your friends with those. Study halls are just there on weeknights, and depending on the season, it takes place at a time after dinner for two hours.
Hey, just wanted to say I was accepted as co’21 as well I think most schools try and pair new incoming 10th graders with eachother, though I’m not 100% sure.
@StandardizedGirl, thank you so much for your answers! It’s reassuring to hear that new sophomores adapt well at Milton. See you in September!
Idk be careful
If you google the name of almost any boarding school + scandal, something is likely to pop up. One should not exclude schools based upon past scandals, but should look to see how the school dealt with the scandal and the steps that they have take to protect current/future students.
Hey everyone! I was also accepted to Milton as a 1oth grader and I’m pretty excited. Does Milton have a very open campus and what’s the system for leaving the campus to go somewhere nearby? Also, what is an average school day at Milton like? (like when you eat, classes, free periods, homework/study time, sports and ec’s)
omg you’re going to be in my class! ('21)
@Confuzzeldteen @bubbles42 @Slalomkid23
The campus is pretty large, but remember that a portion of it is for the elementary and middle schoolers. If you’re a boarder, to leave campus you must have a dorm parent approve of your plans. Sophomores usually have more frees than they did in their freshman year. You would usually eat during your free periods in the middle of the day. If you’re boarding, three days a week are set aside for “sit-down dinners”. On the night of these dinners (Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday), the whole dorm will gather in the dining hall that is closest (Forbes or Elliot) and you will all eat together. Boarders have there study hall from 7:30-9:30 PM and our lights out next year will be at 11 PM! IF you have any more questions, feel free to keep asking!
Hey that’s cool, I’m joining as 10th ('21) too!
ahhh I’m actually so excited for you guys!!!
@altablue @Confuzzeldteen @bubbles42 @Slalomkid23
Are any of you coming to the revisit days?
Thank you so much @ishy1522 ! I do have a few more questions actually, how do you find the 50/50 boarding to day situation like? Is the campus quiet on weekends because of it? Also, do you know anything about Milton’s arts and science programs? Once again, thank you! And @altablue it’s super cool to find another person coming in as class of 2021!! (I’m kinda nervous that I’ll have a hard time making new friends as a shy incoming tenth grader lol)
@ishy1522 I wish, but the timing isn’t at all good, I’m just gonna have to be prepared to hit the ground running in September
@Confuzzeldteen : you wouldn’t notice the 50/50 day and boarder thing during the school week (of course), but the weekends are usually quiet. Sunday’s are especially quiet because there aren’t any games or dances. When it comes to science courses, sophomores usually take Chemistry or Honors Chemistry! There are also many arts courses. I don’t know all of them by heart, but there’s photography, drawing/painting, film, and drama class. You need to take atleast one year of an arts course, so after you’ve taken one of these, you can stop or continue!
