Hey everyone, I have been accepted to Milton Academy and will be attending as a 10th grader. I was wondering if there was anyone who had attended Milton or has been there as I have so many question about the school.
Could someone tell me what the pros and cons of Milton are? How the experience at the school is? How is the campus?
Thanks in advance!
Hi @awesomev‌ …Milton is a great school, at par with Exeter and Andover. Uses Harkness method for teaching. Campus is huge and their new Pritzker Science Center is state of the art with more than impressive labs. Athletics are second to none and academics super strong. Over the top music program. You must be getting a bunch of materials and emails from the school welcoming you, that should provide you a good impression of the school. Would you be able to attend the revisit day? On the negative side, I have read on these forums that boarders don’t like the 50/50 ratio of boarders/day students, to me its a non-issue and in fact I find it on the positive side. You can PM me if you like.
Hey, congratulations on getting into Milton! I’m a current Milton junior and I honestly love it. Milton is (in my opinion) a fairly relaxed, liberal school with extremely high academic standards. Classes are heavily discussion based, with lots of opportunities to contribute or debate. As I’ve learned in a lot of my classes, anything to do with learning is fair game. Milton has particularly strong English, Arts, Music and Humanities departments, but excelling in Maths at Milton might require a little bit more self study (at least, in my experience). The dorms have a lot of dorm pride and are generally welcoming, warm environments. Day students are regular guests at dorms and the divide isn’t too distinctive, although boarders are generally a little more familiar with who’s in which house and so on. Our campus is a little smaller than other prep schools’ but is just as picturesque. Its location from Boston is ideal, a mere 15 minute drive away. Students and teachers alike use the short distance to their advantage, often going into Boston for either field trips or days out. There’s even a trolley station very close to campus, which makes getting into Boston much easier. I hope I covered a little bit of Milton background information to your satisfaction and you should ask if you have any more questions
thanks @rawrcats‌ for the post, could you please check your messages? Could you please also talk about homework, daily work pressure and teachers’ availability?
Not 50/50 (boarding/day) according to 2014 numbers: 94 Boarding; 49 Day
That’s one data point; the 2014 incoming students (across all Upper School forms). The overall breakdown is still 50/50.

@mathmusicmadness‌, are you at Milton? Not sure if you included the # of 8th graders joining the Freshman year, they would all be day students.
Those numbers are just Upper School incoming students in 2014. However, for total Upper School, the breakdown is still 50/50 as I said in post #5.

@Skieurope I agree, my comment was for mathmusicmadness. I agree that boadring/day student ratio is 50:50.
Do you know anyone at Milton, I am looking to connect with families at Milton.
Sure! Homework is (generally) kept to a reasonable level, limited to around one hour per subject until the next class. Keeping organised and not letting homework pile up is key. By keeping on top of your daily assignments, completing major assignments will be much easier. That being said, Milton students do get a lot of work and teachers are extremely understanding about deadlines; most, if not all, will give extensions if you plan ahead. Feeling the pressure at Milton is completely normal–as much as they try to make Milton a supportive environment (which it is), the sad reality is that high school students are generally swamped with work and high expectations. In these cases, I’ve known teachers to be extraordinarily flexible with deadlines: for example, on the week the History term paper is due, other teachers will not assign any major assignments and will rarely give a lot of homework. Teachers are also readily available to help–I’ve seen teachers go out of their ways by visiting dorms at late hours to work with a student. Meeting with teachers is completely normal and often just a part of your schedule–Milton teachers have seen it all, so if you have any problems in their classes, chances are they know how to help. Any more questions?
I’m going to Milton for 2015-16 as a freshman
What do students do during Saturdays and Sundays? Does the school offer trips to the city?
@rokraii
During Saturdays/Sundays, the SAA (Students Activities Association) plans on campus activities for the boarders (dances, movie nights, etc. ) and there are shuttles to South Shore Plaza and the movies. Sometimes, kids go to Boston but they have to be back by checkout time. If you are requesting a late night, which is basically returning to your dorm at 11pm, you must have an appropriate ratio of upperclassmen and underclassmen in order to go to Boston and return late. On Sundays at 6pm (I think), there is a chapel required for all boarders and you have to wear formal attire.
and most people sleep in on the weekends
@rachh019 thank you!! see you in a few weeks
