Mini Fridge and Microwave rentals

I heard that you can rent a mini fridge and a microwave fairly cheaply, but I haven't received anything in the mail about it. Can anyone give me any information on this rental program?

It’s not really very cheap:

My S rented one last year and it was worth it. It certainly beat buying one and lugging back and forth from NJ. Since you are coming from Hawaii it is probably worth it for you. It is obviously not very big but big enough. You can get a few pints of ice cream in the freezer section. The fridge is also a decent size. I remember seeing about a dozen assorted drinks (water/soda) and some other things.

The dorm rooms look so small. Is there room for a fridge and still room to move around? My son will be in Stevers and we are still trying to figure out if he wants a microfridge.

I had my bed set up to be at a mid-height (I had the bottom bunk, flipped the mattress holder over so it help the bed up ~3’ instead of 1’) and I was able to slide my refrigerator underneath my bed. It was a pretty tight fit, but definitely the best setup of my friends.

My S rented one last year - the rental for a year was about what my D paid to buy one in Northwestern. He also ended up with a $25 fine for not returning it spic-and-span.

Wait until you get there. So that you can check out the room and your roommates. You can buy from OfficeDepot, etc and have free delivery.

As noted, the beds can be raised to fit a 1.7 cu. ft. fridge underneath. If you do buy a mini-fridge, it can be stored over the summer in the dorm’s storage room. I’m not sure how delivery would work though; all packages go to the mailroom but the larger mini-fridge (like with a freezer) may have to be directly delivered and I doubt the stores will deliver to a dorm. Maybe someone has had that done?

Try checking Sears and Home Depot as well as Target, WalMart, etc. You might be able to order online and pick up at a local branch.

The mail room has a cart and hand truck they lend out to students with large packages if it comes USPS/UPS. If it’s actually getting delivered like a normal refrigerator then there shouldn’t be a problem having the moving guys put it in the apartment.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Last year when my S was in Stever, he had a flier which either stated or implied that he couldn’t buy his own fridge, and there was only one authorized company that he could get it from as an annual rental. I can’t vouch that this was actually the case - I just remember it made it sound like that, and again I don’t know if it applies this year too since he’s moved off-campus.

Per the FAQ’s on the CMU housing site:

DS has one of the little 1.7 cu. ft. cooler type refrigerators which has been good enough for his needs. He stores it on campus over the summer. It probably wouldn’t be hard to pick up a used one from another student who no longer needs theirs.
