Minimum SAT scores

I STRONGLY AGREE with raimius,

My son's ACT scores were much higher than his SAT scores. ACT can also benefit students that are strong in the Sciences. You've got nothing to loose by testing both. You might not get to stay out late the night before your Test Date. You also have to get up early on a weekend and you loose a few hour of sleep. So what! I heard read AFA cadets will be out of bed at 5:00 AM this fall.

I say test, test and test again. You never know what they are looking for.

My son had the whole package: top 15% of his class (highly competive high school ranked 5th in State for academics), GPA 3.833/4.0, fantastic recommendations, way above average of CFA, nomination, varsity letter winner and lots of extra-curriculars. Cleared by DODMERB for PNQ. SAT: 660 Math, 570 Verbal. ACT 27 Math, 29 Verbal. Got his "thin" letter last week.

His ALO couldn't really give us an explanation except that maybe because he was "navigator qualified" rather that "pilot qualified" or his verbal scores were a tad too low. My son is also not a standardized test taker, but we thought his recommendations and his grades showed his academic qualifications.

He did receive a Falcon Foundation scholarship to attend a prep school, but is waivering on that decision. I think he is still too hurt to consider another option.

My advise would be, you can never be too good. Always continue to strive for the best in everything. You don't know the competition you will be up against or what their qualifications will be. Good luck.

Yes, test many times. My son's scores improved each time he took the test. He had similar stats (top 20% in a top h.s, 3.837 gpa, varsity X-country, lots of extracurriculars, good recs, PNQ, 2 noms), ACT was a 30, SAT was 660V/680M and had a 780 on the SAT Math II subject test, but only had an average CFA. He didn't receive an appointment, prep school or foundation offer. The CFA takes a long time to improve, but great improvement is possible for everyone. I strongly encourage working on your CFA to better your chances for an appointment!

Practice your CFT now! This should probably go on a different thread but, I can't even begin to count how many times I chased a basketball that strayed off course. I can offer a suggestion for the basketball toss. I used a black permanent marker on the concrete to mark the distance in 5' intervals (starting at 65') where the garage floor expantion joint meets the driveway. My son knelt on a foam stadium cushion. GOOD LUCK!
