Just wondering if there's anyone on these boards who will be attending callback weekend next week! :]
It'd be nice to see other CCers there!

Congrats on being called back! You are in for a wonderful experience.

Hey! I will be at the callback weekend. I am SO excited but also super nervous that we are auditioning for so many incredible people!

Hey all!

I’m currently a junior in the Guthrie program, and can’t wait to see you all this weekend! If you have any questions about callback weekend or what’s going on in the heads of Judy and Ken (your main auditors) let me know. I know this whole process is extremely nerve-wracking, but just take a breath and relax, all will be well. ; ) I thought my audition for this program sucked and three years later, here I am!

So yeah, I’m here for you if you need me. See you very soon!

Break legs,
Claire

D is going to cb this weekend. Obviously thrilled—loves the opportunity to have an extended period to work with teachers from the program, see how she likes working with them as well as vice-versa (she loved the original audition for this reason as well, got a great vibe that she talked about for days). After 4 years in performing arts high school, the process/philosophy of training (as demonstrated by the teachers she’ll meet) matters incredibly to her. She also loves the importance the program places on academics along with training (she has 3.9 UW GPA/ACT was 31) and decided against almost all of the BFA programs for their lack of real academic opportunity.

So question for UMN/Guthrie student Claire—how much of your schedule is really given over to academic classes? What does your typical course schedule look like?

The first two years of the program, your day is pretty packed. They both follow the same structure: you have your academic classes in the morning until about noon and then you have your BFA classes until 6 or 6:30pm. Freshman have their nights off, although one semester they have to complete a lab for their Tech. class, but that is only one night a week. Some of the freshmen decide to give up their nights to proctor the upperclassmen’s shows. It’s the same structure for sophomore year only now you add rehearsals Tuesday through Friday nights from 7:30-10pm and Saturday from noon to 5pm.

Th first semester of Junior year we go to London. We did take a couple of academic classes but I only had them three days a week (plus, we get Fridays off). The rest of the day, and sometimes night is devoted to theatre classes in various locations all over London.

When you get back from London, the schedule shifts a lot. By this time many students have completed or are almost done with their general education classes. I’m taking one academic class this semester, and then we have roughly one BFA class a day for about three hours. I have Wednesdays off completely. But rehearsal times do increase. Now weekday rehearsals go from 7:30-11pm and Saturdays start at 10am and end at 5pm.
The schedule is pretty much the same for Senior year.

So as far as academics go, it’s just like most majors; the load starts off pretty heavy and covers a broad range of subjects, and as the years go on you focus more and more on your major.

So there’s a very long answer to your question! Did that help at all? I hope your D had a great experience at callback weekend - they seemed like a great bunch of kids this year. Best of luck to her in her college search!
