I am still awaiting my decision from Minnesota, but I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the weather. I'm from Chicago, so cold weather and snow is fine with me, but still Minnesota seems a little intimidating. How has/would it affect college life for a University of Minnesota student? Does it change anything? Is it really that bad? Thanks.

As a resident of the mid-west (Michigan) I know Minneapolis and Chicago weather is very similar, especially when comparing temperatures. Though during the winter season Chicago may likely get more snow due to Lake Michigan. Also during the winter season Minneapolis tends to often be colder.

also, winter is a couple weeks long in minnespolis than chicago

Everyone likes to exaggerate their own weather. You aren’t going to want to relax outside on a lawn chair in January, but you will be fine in your Chicago clothes.

Thanks everyone. I know the weather should be bearable, but I still wish it was somewhere where I can enjoy the weather and play sports outdoors, etc for a longer period of time into the winter.

Don’t worry miniemetto… we still play outside when it gets cold. In fact, most Minnesotans would say their favorite time to play outdoors is the winter. There is one reason, and one reason only, for that: pond hockey.

I’ll tell you what you’re up against: today’s weather in Eden Prairie, MN (15 miles from the U) was about -20 windchill and a high of 8. That was kinda unusually cold, I’d say average around this time is 0ish windchill and 15-20 temp. It’s not that bad at the U cause of the tunnels so you barely have to go outside.

The temp is really no different than Chicago, so that wont be a problem. We do get less snow though. The only real difference is that it (usually) gets colder two-three weeks earlier and warmer two-three weeks later every winter. All the more time to play and watch hockey!

The weather can sometimes make it take a little bit longer to get from class to class on campus, but they’re really really good about getting the plows out there right when it starts snowing. I would say it’s affected my college experience very minimally. Also, the U has a great bus system. They have free bus routes for students that circulate the Washington Avenue Bridge, East Bank, the St. Paul campus, and one that pretty much wraps all of that into one. They run very frequently, and I take them all the time when the weather gets harsh. They’re really quick too. I can get to work on the St. Paul campus in like twenty minutes. If you’re from Chicago, you have nothing to worry about!!!

Brrrr I’m from the West Coast, and so far I’ve gotten into U of M, University of Nevada, University of San Diego, and California Lutheran… I thinkkkk I’m gona have to go with a warmer school :p

I’m from Texas. No matter where I go I’ll freeze to death ><

Thanks everyone. I’m a hockey player, so pond hockey does sound great. I’ll try not to let it affect my decision too much if I get in. Thanks!

lately it’s been highs around 4 or 5. windchills are usually -15 to -25 . later this week it’s supposed to get way warmer, 28.

Luckily the second semester classes start the day after MLK day (this year Jan 18th), so you get to miss a lot of the January cold weather – if you’re out of state at least! :)

Not gonna lie, this weather seems a little brutal. But, I figure if an average 18 year old freshman girl from a state warmer that mine can survive there, I should be fine haha

It’s been decent the last few days. I was outside yesterday in a long sleeve t-shirt and jeans. I think it got about 35 or so. The sun was out and that helps a TON. Luckily Minnesota is really winter in the summer compared to other places like Michigan or Western NY.

We don’t get too much snow - just long, frigid, dry, and sunny winters. But a Minnesota fall and spring make up for it IMO as that is pretty much the best weather in the country.
