Minor in Cinematic Arts

@zelda
Thank you for the clarification!
Do you recommend taking cinema courses for 2 or 4 units? Are the 4 unit courses generally more comprehensive?

Most classes don’t offer a choice between 2 or 4 units and most film classes are 4 units anyway. There are numerous 2 units classes both film majors and minors must take, but 2 units doesn’t always equate to an “easier” class. Some of my CTPR and CTWR 2 unit classes were harder then the 4 units classes I was enrolled in during any given semester!

Don’t choose based on unit count; choose based on what fulfills your requirements and what classes sound most interesting to you!

(There are also some 3 units CTPR classes, but these are usually a lot of work as well!)

Ok, thank you!
I am choosing to minor in cinema as a transfer. Are there a lot of internship or volunteer opportunities or opportunities to gain work experience for film students while studying at USC?

There are always tons of student films that will willingly take volunteers!

ok thank you!
I’ll definitely look into it.

There will be flyers posted up for student films looking for crews, you might have a friend ask you to help out on a shoot, you may even ask a professor if they know anyone who needs additional on-set crew members. You have to actively search it out; the school won’t tell you how to do this.

Same with internships; if you are a minor, I don’t know if you get access to the SCA job board, but there are also many websites that post up entertainment internships. You just have to be careful though, as a lot of LA film “internships” are scams or very, very shady. There were a few instances where students had to sue their internship employers (not just at USC…knew a few LMU film students who had to do this, too.) Make sure its a company you can check out on the internet (through IMDB!).
