What schools offer minors in music performance?

Honesty, I do not know of ANY school that has a minor in music performance. The commitment to performance is one that really requires a major. There are some schools that offer five year double major programs....but these are quite competitive. Some university music programs also offer the option of doing a double major...music and something else. However, the degree course requirements usually make this impossible to do in four years. There are many schools that offer minors in music...but not music performance. DD will take a minor in music which requires theory, ear training and a few music history types of courses. She also has to be in an ensemble and will take private lessons. Is this what you are looking for? DD is NOT a going to pursue performance but loves to play her instruments.

The best way to do it as BA student with major in music, lots of time for all the other interesting courses, including 11 required courses for premed qualification.

Northwestern U. does
There are also a myriad of double-degree possibilities.

well i don't think there exists a minor in performance... but you can certainly minor in music, but i dont think you can get a distinction of minor in performance.

Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt U. offers a minor in music performance.

mmm well you can have a "concentration" in music performance

for instance,
Duke does a music minor with a "concentration" in performance.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

u of florida also offers a minor in music performance if you're interested.

Surprises me a bit about Fl, we spoke with Kristen Stoner not long ago and she said all the students in her studio, in other words everyone getting flute lessons at U of FL are flute performance majors.

Didn't ask about minor since it makes little sense for our daughter.

don't most schools offer a minor in music?????????

A minor in "music" is different than a minor in "music performance". My daughter is taking a minor in music. It requires theory (2 years), ear training (1 year), music history (1 year), private lessons (1 credit per term) and playing in an ensemble. That's it. My son is majoring in music. He has to do all of the above for four full years, plus studio class, chamber music, conducting, composition, class piano, and his private lessons are four credits now. Plus, he plays in multiple ensembles (orchestra, wind ensemble, opera orchestra, chamber orchestra). I cannot imagine how one could fulfil a "minor" in music performance with all of the obligations a performance major must do.

FSU offers a minor in music. The College of Music is highly regarded.

See: http://www.music.fsu.edu/acad-degrees.htm

The entrance requirements are as follows:

Admission to the program is:
a. By approval of the College of Music
b. By a placement audition at the Principal Level on an acceptable instrument or voice.

But for Performance - I suspect thumper1 is correct. Performance is very demanding and most Performance students are near-professionals, if not totally committed to performance.

conn college has a music performance minor (called 'applied music'), plus free music lessons for all students. or you can design your own major/minor- i have a friend who designed a tuba performance major, and know of another who designed a major in vocal jazz performance
